... Read moreWow, where do I even begin with 'Mary Jane: A Novel' by Jessica Anya Blau? I picked this up recently, partly because the cover caught my eye – that classic novel aesthetic, and seeing it was a 'MOST CURRENT READ' with a five-star buzz, I knew I had to give it a shot. And let me tell you, I was not disappointed! It's truly a gem that I've been recommending to everyone in my bookish circles. The original review was spot on: this book really shows you how different families can be. But it's so much more than that. Jessica Anya Blau masterfully transports you back to 1970s Baltimore, where 14-year-old Mary Jane, a seemingly ordinary, responsible girl from a conservative family, takes a summer nanny job that completely turns her world upside down. Her new employers, Dr. and Mrs. Cone, are unlike anyone she's ever encountered. He's a psychiatrist, and his home is a bohemian haven, a stark contrast to Mary Jane's own meticulously ordered life. What makes this story so captivating is the unexpected houseguest: a famous rock star and his movie-star wife, hiding out from the world while he recovers from addiction. Mary Jane finds herself thrust into this exhilarating, chaotic, and utterly unconventional household. It's a coming-of-age story wrapped in a hilarious and heartwarming package. You really feel her confusion, her awe, and her gradual understanding of a world beyond her experience. The way Blau writes Mary Jane's internal monologue is just brilliant – so authentic to a teenager grappling with new ideas and experiences. I think the quote from Nick Hornby on the cover, praising its charm and humor, perfectly captures the vibe. It navigates themes of identity, family, acceptance, and what it truly means to be 'normal' with such grace and wit. You witness Mary Jane's transformation as she learns to embrace differences, question her preconceived notions, and find her own voice amidst the vibrant personalities around her. It’s funny, poignant, and surprisingly deep. For anyone looking for a read that’s both lighthearted and thought-provoking, 'Mary Jane: A Novel' is an absolute must. If you love stories about unconventional families, growing up, and the music scene of the 70s, this book is definitely for you. It’s the kind of story that stays with you long after you’ve turned the last page, leaving you with a warm feeling and perhaps a new perspective on what makes a family. I give it a solid five stars – it's a perfect book club discussion starter too!
