Fact or Crap
One fascinating aspect of hurricanes is that they never cross the equator due to the Coriolis effect, which influences the rotation of these storms. This force arises from the Earth's rotation and causes hurricanes to spin counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere. Since the Coriolis effect is essentially zero at the equator, hurricanes lose the rotational energy needed to sustain themselves and cannot cross into the opposite hemisphere. Having learned this fact, I find it remarkable how nature’s forces establish such clear boundaries for weather phenomena. During my trip to Palm Springs, I researched storms and realized that while hurricanes affect many parts of the world, they keep confined pathways exhibiting the power of Earth's rotation. Moreover, this knowledge emphasizes the importance of understanding geographic and atmospheric science to predict storm paths accurately. It's also a great example of how combining physics with natural observations can explain why certain phenomena behave as they do.
