... Read moreHi fellow pet parents! As my furbaby turned one, I really started focusing on her diet, making sure it's not just tasty but also perfectly balanced for her active lifestyle. It's a journey, and like many of us, I often find myself asking, 'WHAT'S in my bowl?' when it comes to her meals!
Her absolute favorite, without a doubt, is a hearty 'STEAK DINNER.' I usually prepare thinly sliced steak, cooked rare, exactly how she likes it – she’s quite the connoisseur! To make it a complete meal, I pair the steak with a base of cooked barley, which is great for digestion. The secret ingredient? Finely chopped vegetables like carrots and shredded greens. My little brat doesn't love veggies on their own, so I mix them in thoroughly with the barley, and usually, she doesn't even notice! It’s a win-win for her nutrition and my peace of mind.
Another highly anticipated meal in our household is the 'SALMON BOWL.' This one is fantastic for her coat and overall health, thanks to all those omega-3s. I gently cook fresh salmon pieces and serve them over a yellow grain base – sometimes it's quinoa, other times brown rice, depending on what we have. For an extra boost of minerals, I sprinkle some dark seaweed on top. She absolutely devours it, and I love knowing she’s getting such a nutritious treat.
And for those cooler evenings or when she needs something comforting, a warm 'CATFISH SOUP' is a perfect choice. I slow-cook catfish with a dog-friendly bone broth until it's super tender, then blend it into a smooth, creamy consistency. It's surprisingly easy to make and she practically licks the bowl clean! Sometimes, I'll add a dash of turmeric for its anti-inflammatory properties, but always in small, vet-approved amounts.
One of my biggest challenges used to be her picky eating, especially with greens. But I've learned a few tricks! Besides mixing them into her grains, I sometimes puree vegetables like pumpkin or spinach and blend them into her meat or even into a bit of plain yogurt for a healthy snack. Grating zucchini or sweet potato super fine into her regular kibble (if you're mixing fresh food with kibble) also works wonders. It’s all about stealth and creativity!
For a 1-year-old dog, ensuring a balanced intake of lean protein, healthy fats, complex carbohydrates, and essential vitamins and minerals is crucial. While I love creating these homemade meals, I always keep portion control in mind and ensure everything I use is safe for dogs. It’s a good idea to consult with your veterinarian before making significant changes to your dog's diet, especially if they have any specific health needs.
Seeing her healthy, energetic, and happy makes all the effort worth it. Crafting these meals is truly a labor of love, and knowing I’m providing her with the best possible nutrition is the most rewarding part of being a dog mom to my sassy little 'child'!
