GRWM 3 rude awakenings i experienced in my first weeks of college #collegefreshman #getreadywithme #promo
Hey everyone! So, you've heard about my GRWM storytime where I spilled the tea on my initial college rude awakenings. But what exactly is a 'rude awakening' when you're a freshman stepping onto campus for the first time? For me, it was that sudden, often jarring realization that things aren't quite what you expected, or that the picture you had in your head of college life was, well, a little too perfect. It's not a bad thing necessarily, but it definitely shakes you up! Let's dive a bit deeper into some common 'rude awakenings' beyond just my top three, because trust me, they come in all shapes and sizes when you're preparing for school. One major one I've heard from so many friends, and experienced myself, is the academic shock. In high school, teachers often chased you for homework, and tests might have been pretty straightforward. In college? It’s a whole new ballgame. Professors expect you to be self-motivated, deadlines are firm, and the workload can feel overwhelming. Suddenly, you're responsible for managing your time, understanding complex material, and seeking help when you need it – no one's holding your hand anymore. My first midterm was definitely a rude awakening to how much harder I needed to study! Then there's the social adjustment. You arrive, excited to make a million new friends, only to find it's not always as easy as in the movies. Some people find their crowd instantly, others struggle with loneliness or navigating new social dynamics. It's a huge shift from your comfortable high school circle. I remember feeling so out of place at a few events, which was a real rude awakening about how much effort it takes to build a new support system. It’s part of the GRWMFORSCHOOL experience, where you’re not just getting ready physically, but mentally too for all these new interactions. Another big one? Personal responsibility. Suddenly, you're in charge of *everything*. Your laundry piles up, your budget disappears faster than you thought, and you have to cook (or at least decide what to eat) every single day. No one is reminding you to wake up for your 8 AM class, or telling you to study. This level of independence can be incredibly liberating, but it's also a massive rude awakening for many, myself included, who were used to a more structured home life. These 3 rude awakenings (and more!) are what make your first weeks of college such a profound experience. They're tough, they can be a bit dramatic, and they'll definitely make for some interesting storytime moments later on. But facing them head-on helps you grow so much. Don't be afraid to lean on resources, talk to your RAs, or connect with other freshmen who are probably feeling the exact same way. You're not alone in these 'awakening' moments!
