The Other Black Girl by : Zakiya Dalila Harris

⭐️⭐️ (2/5)

📚 Book Review: The Other Black Girl

I really wanted to love this book.

The premise had so much potential, a Black woman navigating corporate America while trying to find her place in an environment where she’s constantly “the only one.” I expected tension, psychological suspense, and meaningful conversations about race, identity, and belonging.

Instead, I spent most of the book feeling confused.

The pacing was slow for me, the storyline felt scattered, and by the time the mystery started coming together, I found myself more frustrated than invested. Ironically, discussing this book afterward was more enjoyable than actually reading it.

I also wrestled with my rating. Part of me questioned whether I was being too critical because the author is a Black woman. But I’ve learned that supporting Black authors also means being honest about my reading experience. Fair criticism doesn’t diminish the value of Black storytelling, it makes room for conversations about what resonates with different readers.

I haven’t officially finished the final couple of hours yet, but after spending over a month with this book, I feel confident saying it simply wasn’t for me.

💭 Final Rating: ⭐️⭐️ (2/5)

Have you read The Other Black Girl? Did you love it, hate it, or leave just as confused as I was? Let’s talk. I genuinely enjoyed discussing this book more than reading it. #readersoflemon8 #blackauthors #reading #outfitideasforblackgirl #booktok

... Read moreAfter sharing my honest thoughts on 'The Other Black Girl' by Zakiya Dalila Harris, where I mentioned feeling quite confused, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into why this novel has sparked so much conversation and what makes it such a talked-about title. While it didn't quite hit the mark for me personally, there's no denying its impact and the important themes it explores. Many readers, like me, were drawn in by the intriguing premise: a psychological thriller set in the cutthroat world of publishing, focusing on two Black women navigating systemic racism and microaggressions. The idea of a Black woman finding herself as 'the only one' in a predominantly white corporate environment, only for another Black woman to join and potentially upend her world, is inherently captivating. It touches on themes of race, identity, professional ambition, and the complex dynamics within the Black community when faced with external pressures. Zakiya Dalila Harris truly tapped into a timely and relevant conversation, and that alone makes the book noteworthy. Speaking of the book itself, have you seen the book cover? It's quite striking! The original hardcover often features a bold, somewhat unsettling design, sometimes with fragmented or overlaid images that hint at the psychological layers within. It really sets a mood that promises suspense and intrigue, perfectly aligning with the 'RIVETING, FEARLESS, AND VIVIDLY ORIGINAL' quote mentioned by Emily St. John Mandel. I think the cover does an excellent job of visually representing the dualities and tensions central to the story, which might be why so many people are looking for it online. It's definitely an eye-catcher on a bookstore shelf. Beyond the pages, 'The Other Black Girl' made its way to the screen as a Hulu series, and many are curious about the Hulu poster and the adaptation itself. The show's promotional materials often feature a similar aesthetic to the book cover, emphasizing the two main characters, Nella and Hazel, in a way that suggests mystery and confrontation. I always find it fascinating to see how a story translates from book to screen. Sometimes the adaptation can clarify elements that felt ambiguous in the book, or it can take the narrative in completely new directions. For those who, like me, found the book's pacing slow or its plot scattered, the visual medium of a TV series might offer a different, perhaps more digestible, experience. Watching the show can be a great way to engage with the story's core messages even if the book wasn't your favorite read. It allows for a different kind of exploration of topics like workplace discrimination, gaslighting, and the pressures faced by Black professionals. While my personal reading experience was mixed, I recognize that 'The Other Black Girl' has resonated deeply with many, sparking important discussions about racial fatigue and the burden of representation. It's a testament to Zakiya Dalila Harris's courage to tackle such complex subjects. Whether you're drawn to the book for its premise, its striking cover, or its Hulu adaptation, it's certainly a work that encourages reflection and conversation. I hope this extra insight helps anyone looking to understand more about this intriguing novel, regardless of whether you end up loving it or, like me, finding it a bit of a head-scratcher!

Being the only one in the office is exhausting. Then another Black woman gets hired… and things somehow get worse. The Other Black Girl blends workplace satire with psychological tension in a way that feels uncomfortably real. If you’ve ever navigated corporate spaces while code-switching…
