INTERIOR DESIGN SUPPLIES 👩🏽‍💻

2025/7/31 Edited to

... Read moreHey everyone! As an interior design student, I know first-hand how overwhelming it can be to figure out what supplies you truly need for college. When I first started, my head was spinning with all the options, and honestly, some things I bought weren't even that useful! That's why I wanted to dive a bit deeper into my list of essentials and share some real talk about why these items are game-changers and how to make the best choices. Let’s talk about the Wooden T-Square first. You might think, 'Why wood?' Well, in my experience, a good quality wooden T-square offers a smoother glide over paper and often feels more balanced than plastic ones. It’s absolutely crucial for drawing straight lines and accurate layouts. Don't skimp on this! Look for one with a durable head that won't wobble. I learned the hard way that a flimsy T-square leads to frustratingly crooked lines on presentations. Next up, Prismacolor markers and colored pencils. These aren't just for looking pretty; they're your primary tools for rendering designs and bringing your ideas to life with color and texture. For markers, you don't necessarily need the largest set right away. Start with a smaller set of essential neutrals, grays, and a few key accent colors. You can always expand later. For colored pencils, Prismacolor Premier are known for their rich pigment and blendability. They can add fantastic detail and depth that markers sometimes can't achieve alone. I often use them to add subtle shadows or to define textures like wood grain that would look too flat otherwise. Engineering and Architectural Scales are non-negotiable. You'll be constantly converting measurements and drawing to scale. My advice? Get both! They look similar but are used for different scales (e.g., architectural for feet and inches, engineering for decimal feet). It's easy to get them mixed up, so maybe label them or keep them in separate compartments in your pencil case. Precision is key in design, and these are your best friends for accuracy. Stencils might seem old-school, but trust me, they save so much time when you're drafting furniture, fixtures, or even standard symbols. There are specific stencils for furniture, plumbing fixtures, electrical symbols, and even human figures. Having a good set, especially one with basic furniture outlines, can speed up your drawing process immensely during tight deadlines. And oh, Micron pens! These are my absolute favorite for crisp, clean line work. You'll need a range of tip sizes, from super fine (005 or 01) for details and dimensions, to thicker ones (03 or 05) for outlines and main elements. They're waterproof and won't smudge when you go over them with markers, which is a lifesaver. I learned to love them when trying to get perfect ink lines on my floor plans. Finally, Drafting dots or tape and Trace paper. These are your unsung heroes. Drafting dots are small adhesive circles that hold your paper firmly in place without leaving residue, which is far better than regular tape. Trace paper is essential for layering, experimenting with ideas, and refining your sketches without messing up your original drawing. I literally go through rolls of trace paper during project weeks, using it to overlay different layout options or to test out various design elements. My biggest tip for incoming students is to not feel pressured to buy everything brand new or the most expensive version. Check out art supply store sales, look for student discounts, or even consider buying gently used items from graduating students. Focus on quality for key items like your T-square and scales, and build your collection of markers and pencils over time. Good luck, future designers!
