Canopy ON or OFF?

As an avid Toyota Hilux owner here in Western Australia, deciding whether to keep the canopy on or off has been a bit of a balancing act for me. Having the canopy on definitely offers excellent protection for your gear, shielding it from Perth's unpredictable weather—especially the harsh sun and occasional rain. It also enhances security by keeping your tools and supplies out of sight and locked away. This can be a huge advantage if you leave your Hilux parked in public or on job sites. On the downside, some Hilux users find that the canopy can reduce the truck's versatility, making it harder to transport taller items or awkward loads. It adds extra weight, which might impact fuel efficiency slightly, and unless well-ventilated, it can trap heat inside during hot Western Australian summers. For me, I often leave the canopy off when I’m heading out for weekend adventures, fishing trips, or when hauling bulky cargo that doesn’t fit easily underneath. But for daily work use or camping gear storage, the canopy is a lifesaver. Also, the canopy adds to the Hilux’s rugged, utilitarian look that many of us down under appreciate. Ultimately, the choice comes down to what you use your Hilux for most. If you regularly transport sensitive gear or want extra security and weather protection, canopy on is the way to go. But if you prioritize flexibility and need to carry oversized loads, canopy off makes more sense. Whichever you choose, the Toyota Hilux remains an unbeatable vehicle for Western Australia's diverse terrain and lifestyle.
