Hey Lemon8 fam! I'm so excited to share more about the process behind my latest piece, a vibrant abstract cityscape painting that's been getting a lot of love. For me, urban landscapes aren't just concrete and steel; they're living, breathing entities pulsing with energy and stories. That’s exactly what I aimed to capture on canvas – not a photographic representation, but the very essence and feeling of a bustling city. When I started this artwork, my vision was to distill the complex beauty of an urban environment into something raw and expressive. I began by laying down layers of vibrant colors – soft pinks, light greens, blues, and deep blacks – letting them blend and drip organically to create a foundational texture. Over this, I introduced bold black graffiti-style strokes. These weren't just random marks; they were my way of mimicking the spontaneous, often chaotic, yet beautiful lines you see in city life, from power lines crisscrossing the sky to the intricate patterns of scaffolding. The visible drips were kept intentionally, adding to that raw, unfinished, yet perfectly expressive artistic style. Next came the stylized buildings, which are the heart of this cityscape. Instead of rendering them realistically, I used blocks of black, yellow, red, blue, and peach colors to form angular, almost cubist structures. This allowed me to play with light and shadow, creating a sense of depth and movement. To add further visual punch and an energetic urban landscape feel, I adorned some of these blocks with white or black geometric patterns. These patterns suggest windows, brickwork, or even the abstract reflections found on glass skyscrapers, transforming simple shapes into dynamic architectural elements. My art studio, which you might have seen glimpses of before, is typically a wonderfully cluttered space – full of brushes, paints, canvases, and even a small American flag hanging in the corner. It's in this environment, surrounded by tools and other artworks in various stages, that these colorful, stylized buildings truly come to life against an imagined blue sky. There’s something incredibly satisfying about seeing the canvas transform, reflecting the vibrant chaos and beauty of cities I've visited or imagined.
