World War One history in 10 seconds: Decades before the Vietnam War, thousands of Vietnamese men were sent halfway around the world during the First World War.
At the time, Vietnam formed part of French Indochina and was under French colonial rule. During World War I, France recruited large numbers of men from Indochina for military and labour service.
Vietnamese soldiers served in a variety of military roles, while an even larger number of Vietnamese workers were sent to France to support the wartime economy and military supply system.
Their experiences formed part of the much larger contribution made by people from France's colonial empire during the First World War.
It is a largely forgotten chapter of both Vietnamese and World War I history, and one that took place decades before the conflicts that would later make Vietnam famous around the world.
