The REAL reason the Luftwaffe fell apart ⚔️ Operation Argument
War history in 10 seconds: From 20–25 February 1944, the Allies launched Operation Argument—better known as Big Week—a massive air offensive against Germany’s aircraft industry and the Luftwaffe defending it.
American B-17 Flying Fortress and B-24 Liberator bombers attacked aircraft factories, engine plants and assembly facilities across Germany during daylight. RAF Bomber Command continued striking major targets at night, creating sustained pressure on German air defences.
But destroying factories was only part of the plan.
The bomber formations were also intended to force German fighter pilots into the air, where long-range Allied escorts—including P-47 Thunderbolts, P-38 Lightnings and increasingly effective P-51 Mustangs—could engage them. Fierce battles erupted above the clouds as Messerschmitt Bf 109s and Focke-Wulf Fw 190s attempted to break through the escort screen and attack the bombers.
The fighting was extremely costly for both sides. Allied forces lost bombers, fighters and experienced aircrews, while the Luftwaffe suffered aircraft losses it could replace more easily than its increasingly scarce veteran pilots. German aircraft production continued, but maintaining a trained and effective fighter force became much harder.
Operation Argument did not destroy the Luftwaffe in a single week. However, it accelerated the decline of Germany’s fighter arm and helped the Allies move closer to the air superiority needed for the Normandy landings on 6 June 1944.
Thousands of aircraft. Six days of relentless combat. One air offensive that helped clear the skies before D-Day.
