They SECRETLY Dug Beneath the ENEMY ⚔️ Battle of Messines
War history in 10 seconds: For months, Allied tunnellers secretly worked beneath German positions at Messines Ridge. The soldiers occupying the trenches above had no idea enormous explosive charges were being prepared beneath their feet.
At 3:10 a.m. on 7 June 1917, 19 mines exploded beneath the German lines.
The blasts tore enormous craters into the battlefield and devastated sections of the defenses. Almost immediately, Allied artillery opened up and infantry began advancing across the shattered ridge.
British, Australian, New Zealand and other Allied troops fought to capture the strategically important high ground during one of World War I’s most carefully prepared offensives.
The Battle of Messines became one of the defining examples of underground warfare on the Western Front—and one of the most dramatic opening attacks of the entire First World War.
