The Battle to Escape Firebase Ripcord 🪖 Vietnam War
War history in 10 seconds: In July 1970, U.S. Army troops fought a desperate battle at Firebase Ripcord during the Vietnam War.
Soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division were operating from the remote fire support base in the mountains of South Vietnam when North Vietnamese forces increasingly threatened the position.
For weeks, PAVN forces subjected Firebase Ripcord and surrounding American positions to mortar, artillery and small-arms fire while intense fighting spread across the nearby mountains.
As the situation became increasingly dangerous, U.S. commanders ordered Firebase Ripcord evacuated on 23 July 1970.
The withdrawal became a dangerous helicopter evacuation under enemy fire. UH-1 Hueys and CH-47 Chinooks flew into the battle zone while American soldiers defended the firebase and U.S. artillery and aircraft struck surrounding North Vietnamese positions.
The Battle of Firebase Ripcord cost the United States 75 killed and hundreds wounded, with multiple helicopters lost or damaged during the wider fighting.
Firebase Ripcord became one of the 101st Airborne Division's last major battles of the Vietnam War, yet today it remains far less famous than battles such as Hamburger Hill, Khe Sanh and Ia Drang.
