America’s Bloodiest Vietnam War Ambush 🪖 Battle of LZ Albany

War history in 10 seconds: On 17 November 1965, U.S. Army troops moving toward Landing Zone Albany in South Vietnam's Ia Drang Valley walked into a devastating North Vietnamese ambush.

Just days after the famous fighting at Landing Zone X-Ray, soldiers of the 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) were moving overland toward LZ Albany.

The American column stretched through thick vegetation and elephant grass when North Vietnamese Army (PAVN) troops struck at extremely close range.

The jungle erupted with machine-gun fire, automatic weapons, grenades and close-range combat as the American column became fragmented and soldiers fought desperately from isolated positions.

The fighting became chaotic, with American and North Vietnamese troops sometimes battling at such close distances that U.S. artillery and air support were difficult to employ safely.

American forces eventually established defensive positions while artillery and other supporting fire struck North Vietnamese forces around the battlefield.

The fighting at LZ Albany became one of the bloodiest encounters for U.S. forces during the Vietnam War and formed the brutal final chapter of the Ia Drang campaign of November 1965.

While the Battle of Ia Drang at LZ X-Ray became famous for its helicopter warfare, LZ Albany demonstrated just how deadly a well-prepared jungle ambush could be.
