7.3 Powerstroke Swapping a 1976 Ford Crewcab

Hey everyone! I’m so excited to finally share the full story of my epic 7.3 Powerstroke swap into my beloved 1976 blue Ford Crewcab. This wasn’t just a simple engine replacement; it was a full-blown highboy Ford swap, transforming a classic into a modern, powerful beast. I know many of you are curious about 7.3 Powerstroke engine swaps, especially into older Ford trucks, so I wanted to share my experience from start to finish. It all started with the decision to pull the original 460 engine. The empty engine bay looked daunting, but I knew the 7.3 Powerstroke was the perfect heart for this project. Sourcing a good donor pickup truck for the 7.3 Powerstroke engine was key, and once I had it, the real work began. We took off the entire front clip to give ourselves plenty of room to work, and this was also the perfect time to address some worn-out body mounts and clean up the chassis. Next came the chassis modifications. This isn't just about dropping the engine in; you need to make sure everything else can handle the new power and fit correctly. We made significant changes to the chassis and firewall, integrating essential upgrades like hydroboost for improved braking, custom ZF5 linkage for the transmission, and new steering components. Fabricating new engine perches was crucial for securing the 7.3 Powerstroke engine, and we even had to notch the crossmember for proper clearance. Seeing the 7.3 Powerstroke engine being lowered into the engine bay was a huge milestone and a really satisfying moment in the build. Once the engine was in, the focus shifted to cooling and performance. Fitting a Superduty intercooler to the core support was a bit of a puzzle, requiring some precise trimming of the grille to accommodate it. I also upgraded to a 38r turbo and a 6.4 Powerstroke intake, which really helps the engine breathe. No Powerstroke swap is complete without a robust fuel system, so a full fuel system and regulated return installation were next on the list to ensure reliable performance. Inside, I wanted a functional yet classic feel. I installed a custom floor shifter with a twin stick cable shifter mechanism, which looks great and provides precise control. Looking ahead, I'm already planning a rear disc conversion for better stopping power and a fuel tank relocation to optimize space and weight distribution.
