At Home Hair Color without Losing It All ✨

SPECIFICALLY what to do when going from

one semi permanent fantasy color to the next. I’ve been addicted to hair dye since I was in high school, I even got my cosmetology license in Texas that I still keep up with. While I don’t do other people’s hair right now, I’m still the only one I trust to do my color. Here’s my process and some recommendations to help keep your hair together. 🫶

I’ve been growing my hair out for a little over two years after a bad mullet cut. The ends will feel dry some days and I could use a good cut for the layers, but overall I do not experience a ton of breakage anymore. I do not use heat on my hair often (a few times a month, 3-4) and let it air dry most hair washing days.

Be mindful this may not work for everyone depending on hair type, type of previously added color, etc. Always be careful working with lightener and color remover. 🖤

To ensure a successful transition between semi-permanent colors, it's vital to choose the right products that suit your hair type and previous treatments. Always perform a patch test to prevent allergic reactions, especially if you're switching dyes or using lighteners. Consider using products like L'oreal Effasol Color Remover for removing old hues effectively before applying a new color. For lightening, Clairol BW2 Powder Lightener combined with a 20-volume developer can help achieve the desired shade, but caution is necessary to avoid damage. It's essential to apply lighteners carefully, starting from roots for new growth and progressing towards the ends to ensure even color distribution. After coloring, care for your hair with a clarifying conditioner that provides moisture and protection from breakage. Cold water rinses post-coloring can help seal the cuticle for longer-lasting vibrancy. Remember to avoid excessive heat styling to maintain hair health, and embrace regular trims to keep your ends looking fresh. Utilizing toners can help eliminate brassiness in the final look; the Wella Charm line is an excellent option for achieving cooler, ashy tones. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding soaking time for toners to achieve the best results. Experiment with color combinations, and enjoy the process of self-expression through your hair!
