After recovering from a rough week of illness, jumping back into an Instacart shopping shift felt like diving into the deep end — chaotic but oddly satisfying. Having shopped with Instacart for a while, these hectic shifts are somewhat typical, but this one stood out due to the many challenges I faced. One of the toughest parts about these shifts is handling order replacements and substitutions. Sometimes an item is out of stock or can’t be added because it exceeds certain limits, which leaves shoppers to find suitable alternatives quickly. In my recent shift, the app repeatedly declined replacements, forcing me to call for support and spend extra time navigating the frustration. It’s a stressful scenario that any Instacart shopper can relate to. I also noticed how important it is to stay well-hydrated and fueled during these hectic shopping runs. I grabbed energy bars and caffeine boosts to keep my energy up — a must when racing between aisle shelves and navigating crowded stores. Items like Chobani yogurts and various energy bars (like Quest, Laird, and Aloha) are staples I rely on during longer shifts. Something I can’t stress enough to new shoppers is the value of clear photography and documentation. Instacart requests photos of purchased items to verify orders, but it’s crucial the photos don't include any private info, people, or cars to avoid issues. It might seem tedious, but it protects you from disputes or payment problems. Despite the stressful moments, there’s a real gratification in completing a difficult shift and earning from a side hustle you can manage on your own terms. Being an Instacart shopper is far from perfect — orders get canceled, refunds get processed, and sometimes you deal with unexpected difficulties like power outages or signage confusion at stores. But for me, the flexibility and extra income make it worth the chaos. If you're thinking about starting Instacart shopping as a side hustle, my advice is: prepare for unpredictability, stay organized, and keep your cool during stressful moments. Each shift teaches you something new, and before long, handling the chaos becomes second nature. Plus, sharing my experiences through videos or posts helps connect with others in the same hustle and makes the journey feel less lonely.
