Teaching myself to draw!

Decided to try drawing with a ballpoint pen! Blending didn't go as smoothly as I thought it would but they didn't turn out too bad!

... Read moreWhen I first decided to try my hand at drawing, I never thought a simple ballpoint pen would be my go-to tool. But there's something incredibly liberating about picking up a common everyday item and turning it into an art medium. My recent experiment with ballpoint pen drawing truly opened my eyes to its potential, even with its unique challenges. One of the biggest hurdles, as I quickly discovered, was blending. Unlike pencils where you can smudge and erase to create smooth transitions, pen ink is permanent and opaque. I initially struggled with creating soft gradients, especially when working on the petals of the blue flower drawing. It felt like I was just layering darker and darker lines. However, through trial and error, I started exploring different shading techniques like hatching and cross-hatching. Hatching involves drawing parallel lines close together, and cross-hatching adds another layer of parallel lines perpendicular to the first. This method allowed me to build up depth and texture gradually, giving the flower a more organic feel. For the deeper shadows, I experimented with stippling – creating tiny dots that, when viewed from a distance, merge to form areas of tone. The anatomical heart drawing presented a different kind of challenge, requiring precision and an understanding of form. I focused on using varying pressure to create different line weights, which is crucial for defining the intricate veins and arteries. A lighter touch for outlines and delicate details, and more pressure for bolder, darker areas. This control over pressure is a core aspect of effective pen drawing and something I'm continuously practicing. For any fellow new artists out there thinking of trying pen drawing, here’s what I learned: Embrace the permanence: You can't erase, and that's okay! It forces you to be more deliberate with your strokes and to see "mistakes" as opportunities for unique character. Experiment with pressure: A ballpoint pen isn't just one line weight. Practice varying your pressure to create a range of values, from light wisps to bold, dark lines. Master basic shading techniques: Hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, and even circular scribbling are your best friends for creating depth and form without traditional blending. Start simple: Don't jump straight into a complex landscape. Begin with everyday objects, simple shapes, or even just practicing lines and curves to get a feel for the medium. Observe and replicate textures: Pay attention to how light hits objects and how their surfaces appear. Try to replicate those observations using your pen techniques. The details in the blue flower and the texture of the heart were a direct result of trying to observe and represent. What I love about pen drawing is its accessibility. You don’t need fancy supplies – just a pen and paper. It’s also incredibly portable, making it perfect for sketching on the go. The permanence of the medium pushes you to commit to your lines and develop a more confident hand. While blending might not be as smooth as with other mediums, the unique shading and texture you can achieve with a ballpoint pen are incredibly rewarding. I'm excited to continue my journey and see what else I can create with this surprisingly versatile tool!
