While those 'Welcome Home Puppy Resources' kits are a fantastic start, the real journey begins when your puppy settles in. One of the most important things I’ve learned for a smooth transition, especially around 4 months old, is the power of a consistent schedule.
At 4 months, your Frenchie puppy is still very much a baby but developing rapidly. They're exploring their world, learning boundaries, and their little bladders are still quite small! A predictable routine helps them feel secure, speeds up potty training, and provides structure for feeding, play, and much-needed naps.
Here’s a peek into what a typical 4-month French Bulldog puppy schedule might look like, based on my own experience:
Morning (6:00 AM - 10:00 AM):
Wake Up & Potty: First thing, straight outside! Celebrate success with praise. Consistency is key here. Your little grey French Bulldog puppy will learn quickly.
Breakfast: Feed a high-quality puppy food. I usually follow the breeder's recommendation or vet's advice on portion sizes.
Playtime & Training: After breakfast, a short, gentle play session (remember Frenchies can overheat easily!) and 5-10 minutes of basic command training (sit, stay, come). Our 'Welcome Home Puppy Resources' kit often includes some small, soft toys perfect for this age.
Potty Break & Nap: Back outside for another potty break, then into their crate for a nap. This helps with house-training and provides essential rest.
Mid-day (10:00 AM - 2:00 PM):
Potty Break: As soon as they wake up from their nap, it’s outside again.
Quiet Play/Chew Time: Offer a safe chew toy (like one from their welcome kit) while you get things done. Supervise to ensure safety.
Potty Break & Nap: Another potty opportunity, then back to the crate for more rest. Puppies need a lot of sleep!
Afternoon (2:00 PM - 6:00 PM):
Potty Break: You guessed it – outside as soon as they're up.
Lunch (if applicable): Some puppies at 4 months might still have a third meal. Check with your vet.
Socialization/Exploration: This is a great time for controlled socialization. If they’re fully vaccinated, a short, gentle walk around the block (avoiding hot pavements) or a playdate with a vaccinated, friendly dog can be great. Remember, the world is big and new for your Frenchie puppy, whether they have striking blue eyes or a charming fawn coat.
Potty Break & Play: More outdoor time, followed by some indoor play.
Evening (6:00 PM - 10:00 PM):
Potty Break: After play.
Dinner: Your puppy’s last meal of the day.
Cuddle & Quiet Time: Wind down with some gentle petting and quiet play. This builds your bond.
Last Potty Break: Absolutely crucial before bed, usually right before you put them in their crate for the night.
Night (10:00 PM onwards):
Bedtime: Into the crate. At 4 months, many puppies can hold it through the night, but some might need one late-night or early-morning potty trip. If they cry, take them out immediately, then back to bed with minimal fuss.
Important Frenchie-Specific Considerations:
Breathing: French Bulldogs are brachycephalic, meaning they have shortened snouts. Avoid strenuous exercise, especially in warm weather, to prevent overheating. Short, frequent play sessions are better than long, intense ones.
Potty Training: Frenchies can sometimes be a bit stubborn with potty training. Patience and positive reinforcement are your best friends. Celebrate every success!
Socialization: Continue positive exposure to new sights, sounds, people, and other dogs (safely!). This helps them grow into well-adjusted adults.
Vet Visits: At 4 months, your puppy should be nearing the end of their vaccination series and due for a deworming. Regular vet checks are vital for their unique health needs.
Remember, every puppy is an individual. This schedule is a guideline; adjust it to fit your specific French Bulldog puppy's needs and your lifestyle. Consistency, patience, and lots of love will help your new family member thrive!
