... Read moreWhen I first started exploring the world of polyamory and ethical non-monogamy, I found myself confused by the many terms thrown around that seemed intimidating or misleading. Many of these words, like "metamour" and "compersion," carry a lot of stereotypes or misunderstandings that can prevent people from appreciating their true, practical meanings. For instance, learning that a metamour is simply your partner’s partner helped me ease feelings of jealousy and competition, turning it instead into an opportunity to build respectful relationships beyond just the primary couple. It reminded me that these connections don’t have to be rivalrous; they can provide support and understanding within the poly community. Compersion was another revelation. It’s often portrayed as a constant, perfect emotional state where you never feel jealousy. However, understanding compersion as the happiness one feels when a partner experiences joy—even if it’s not always effortless—made me feel more compassionate with my own complex feelings. It’s not about erasing jealousy but recognizing moments of genuine support and care. Hierarchy, a term I initially misunderstood as a sign of unfairness, actually refers to different priorities or commitments within a relationship structure. Accepting this helped me appreciate that not all poly relationships are equal in every aspect, and that's okay—it’s about what works best for those involved. Finally, concepts like "unicorns" and "unicorn hunters" can sound exotic or controversial. Knowing that a unicorn is a rare person who joins an established couple with a clear emotional balance, and that the criticism around unicorn hunters often comes from concerns about power imbalance rather than the relationship style itself, gave me a deeper perspective on consent and respect. Navigating these terms with openness allowed me to connect more genuinely with others in the poly community, fostering relationships rooted in honesty and empathy. For anyone curious or just starting out, grounding yourself in the real meanings behind these words can make the journey far more fulfilling.

A man with reddish-blonde hair, wearing a striped shirt, holds a stack of books. Text overlay reads: "Six gay books that I think are severely underrated (from a real life gay guy)".
A hand holds the book "Enigma Variations" by André Aciman, featuring a sky cover. Text overlay describes it as bisexual, by the author of Call Me By Your Name, and a strong read.
A hand holds the book "Cleanness" by Garth Greenwell, with a light cover showing a person in water. Text overlay describes it as raw, unfiltered gay smut about cruising.
I’ve read a lot of gay books so you can trust me
Posting this because I swear I never hear anyone talk about these books and I loved all of them. If you’re trying to get back into reading and want a fun gay book (doesn’t have to be one from this list) comment what kind of vibe you’re looking for and I’ll give you a recommendation.
