It probably controls an outlet in that room. I would try plugging in a light in all the outlets in the room with the switch off. whatever one doesn't turn the light on, go and turn the switch on. I guarantee the light will light up. Every room in my house has one. It's usually the outlet on the opposite side of the room.

How about if you plug a lamp into an outlet in the living room would the switch work the lamp?
