⏩ by Pridi Phnom Yank, the head of the Thai Freedom Movement, as regent in the 8th reign, 👉 issued a peace declaration in the monastery of King Ananth Nawadil, Amaramathibdhitra.
⏩ to declare war on the United States and Great Britain on January 25, 1942.

⏩ because it was an act against the will of the people and against the Constitution, in which Thai citizens inside and outside the country jointly expressed their will not accept the declaration by establishing the Thai Freedom Movement to assist the Allies in fighting the Japanese army that had occupied Thailand during the war (since December 8, 1941).

วันสันติภาพไทยวันที่ 16 สิงหาคม จึงไม่ใช่แค่วันธรรมดา แต่เป็นวันที่มีความหมายลึกซึ้งในประวัติศาสตร์ของไทยที่สะท้อนเจตนารมณ์ของประชาชนไทยที่ไม่ยอมรับการประกาศสงครามต่อฝ่ายสัมพันธมิตรโดยฝ่ายรัฐบาลญี่ปุ่นที่ยึดครองไทยในสมัยสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 ขบวนการเสรีไทยที่ก่อตั้งขึ้นโดยนายปรีดี พนมยงค์ ได้กลายเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของความร่วมมือระหว่างคนไทยกับฝ่ายสัมพันธมิตรในการต่อสู้กับกองทัพญี่ปุ่น ผมเองรู้สึกภาคภูมิใจที่ได้เรียนรู้เรื่องราวเหล่านี้ เพราะทำให้เข้าใจว่าประเทศไทยเลือกทางแห่งสันติภาพและความเป็นอิสระอย่างไร แม้จะอยู่ในสถานการณ์สงครามที่ลำบากก็ตาม ในวันที่ 16 สิงหาคม พ.ศ. 2488 พระบาทสมเด็จพระปรเมนทรมหาอานันทมหิดล ยังทรงมีพระราชโองการประกาศให้การประกาศสงครามต่อสหรัฐอเมริกาและบริเตนใหญ่เป็นโมฆะ เนื่องจากเป็นการกระทำที่ไม่ตรงกับเจตจำนงของประชาชนและขัดต่อรัฐธรรมนูญ ทำให้ประเทศไทยได้วางรากฐานของการฟื้นฟูและพัฒนาประเทศในยุคหลังสงครามอย่างมั่นคง นอกจากนี้ ผมยังชื่นชมบทบาทของมหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์ที่ได้ตั้งชื่อถนนภายในศูนย์ท่าพระจันทร์ว่า ถนน 16 สิงหาคม เพื่อเป็นการรำลึกถึงเหตุการณ์สำคัญนี้ ถนนสายนี้สื่อถึงความทรงจำร่วมกันของคนไทยในยุคสงครามโลกและการเดินหน้าสู่สันติภาพที่แท้จริง ดังนั้นวันสันติภาพไทยจึงไม่ใช่เพียงวันแห่งประวัติศาสตร์เท่านั้น แต่ยังเป็นวันที่เตือนใจให้เราเสริมสร้างความสงบและความร่วมมือในทุกระดับของสังคม
