As an elementary teacher, I've encountered many challenges and rewarding moments that shape my daily experiences and approach to teaching. When I see hashtags like #teacherquittok and #teachersoftiktok trending, I understand there's a community of educators sharing real and sometimes raw stories about the profession. Math, in particular, has always been a subject that requires not only knowledge but positive encouragement. I've found that fostering the right 'affitude'—a blend of attitude and aptitude—is crucial in helping young students embrace math confidently. It’s about creating an environment where curiosity thrives and mistakes are seen as learning opportunities. The word 'affitude,' slightly misspelled in the context of my teaching, resonates with me as a reminder that attitude often makes all the difference in learning outcomes. Encouraging a growth mindset helps students tackle challenging subjects, especially in elementary school where habits form. Sharing these classroom moments on platforms like TikTok allows us to connect with fellow educators and parents, spreading awareness about what teaching truly involves. It also helps break the stigma around teachers feeling overwhelmed or considering quitting, by highlighting the communal support and resilience within the teaching community. I encourage all educators to share their stories and tips, and for parents to engage in conversations about education openly. Together, we can make teaching and learning a more positive, understanding journey for everyone involved.
