Homemade Biscuits
I have my grandma’s biscuit recipe which happens to be out of 3 ingredients!
- 1/4 cup shortening
- 2 cups self rising flour
- 3/4 cup milk
• Mix shortening into flour until crumbly
• Mix in milk
• Turn onto floured surface and knead for 30 seconds
- Roll out to about 1/2 inch thick
- Bake at 450 degrees for 10-12 minutes or until golden
When removed from oven put salted melted butter on top of biscuits
Of course this was my first time baking these so they didn’t come out quite as fluffy as desired but if they work out for you let me know!
If you're new to baking biscuits at home, one of the keys to achieving fluffy, tender results lies in how you handle the dough. Since this recipe uses only 3 ingredients—shortening, self-rising flour, and milk—it’s essential to keep the shortening cold and mix it quickly into the flour until the texture resembles coarse crumbs. This helps create small pockets of fat that melt during baking, resulting in a light and flaky biscuit. When mixing in the milk, be sure not to overwork the dough; kneading it just for 30 seconds as mentioned is perfect. Over-kneading can lead to tougher biscuits. Rolling the dough to about 1/2 inch thick ensures they bake evenly and have a soft interior with a golden crust. Baking at a high temperature of 450 degrees Fahrenheit for 10-12 minutes allows the biscuits to rise quickly and develop a nice golden color. Don't forget the finishing touch of brushing them with salted melted butter right out of the oven—this step adds moisture and a savory flavor. To troubleshoot fluffiness issues, try refrigerating the dough for 15-20 minutes before rolling it out; this can help the shortening stay firm and improve the dough’s texture. Also, make sure your self-rising flour is fresh since the leavening agents lose effectiveness over time. This classic 3-ingredient biscuit recipe is inspired by a grandma’s timeless method, making it approachable for novice bakers and those short on ingredients. It's perfect for breakfast with jam or served alongside savory dishes. Share your baking successes or tips with the community to help others master their homemade biscuits!
