... Read moreIt’s wild to think back to 2016 and how much gaming changed for me that year. Like many of you, I had my go-to genres, but a few standout titles truly broadened my horizons and cemented my love for certain gameplay styles. It’s fascinating how specific experiences from a single year can leave such a lasting impression, deeply shaping what I look for in games even today.
Take DOOM, for instance. Before 2016, I thought I knew what an FPS was. But DOOM wasn't just another shooter; it was an adrenaline-fueled masterclass in aggressive combat, a symphony of destruction. The way it pushed you to constantly engage, to rip and tear through hordes of demons with glorious, brutal efficiency, was unlike anything I'd experienced. It wasn't about hiding behind cover; it was about moving, attacking, and staying in the fight. It taught me the sheer joy of strategic aggression and made me appreciate finely tuned mechanics in action games. This game really solidified my appreciation for fast-paced, visceral experiences.
And then there was Overwatch. Wow. That game really hit different. The vibrant art style, the incredibly diverse cast of heroes, each with unique abilities, and the dynamic team-based objectives made every match feel fresh and exciting. It sparked a competitive fire in me I didn't know I had, but also a huge sense of camaraderie. I remember countless hours spent trying to master a new hero like Lúcio or Tracer, coordinating ultimate abilities with teammates for that perfect push, and celebrating those clutch plays that turned the tide of a game. It wasn't just a game; it was a community experience, full of memorable meme-worthy moments and incredible esports. The 'silly goose' moments, as some might call them – the unexpected plays, the funny voice lines, the pure chaos and fun of a well-fought objective – were all part of the charm. This game truly embodied the spirit of a '2016 game shaped your taste in gaming', showing me the incredible depth and fun a team-based shooter could offer, moving beyond simple deathmatch into something more strategic, social, and endlessly replayable.
Beyond these personal favorites, 2016 was a powerhouse year for gaming overall, making it a truly exceptional period in video gaming history. Think about it: we also saw the release of *Uncharted 4: A Thief's End*, which masterfully wrapped up Nathan Drake's story, offering breathtaking visuals and cinematic storytelling that set new benchmarks for narrative-driven adventures. Then there was *Dark Souls III*, continuing its legacy of challenging combat, intricate world-building, and cryptic lore, which captivated millions with its notorious difficulty and profound atmosphere. Pokémon GO also took the world by storm, getting millions out exploring their neighborhoods and interacting with the real world, showing the incredible, unexpected potential of augmented reality in gaming. We even saw Stardew Valley emerge, a charming and incredibly addictive farming simulator that proved simple concepts, executed perfectly with heart, could capture hearts globally and offer hundreds of hours of relaxation. Each of these titles, in its own unique way, contributed to making 2016 an unforgettable and defining year for countless gamers.
While Dragon Age Inquisition technically came out a couple of years earlier, its impact on my appreciation for grand RPG narratives, complex character development, and meaningful choices was profound, and its legacy definitely carried through into my gaming tastes in 2016 and beyond. The anticipation for new entries in that series always brings back those cherished memories of epic storytelling.
