How to be comfortable with your culture..

I have struggled with this so much especially since I live in a predominantly white city state and country!!! I realized that the more I wore my cultural clothing the more people would stare and give me weird looks.

The first and most important piece of advice I had to learn was to be confident, people can tell when you’re not comfortably wearing your clothing.

Second was to not care🤷🏾‍♀️. If someone is so used to something that they think someone else culture is a problem they have some self reflecting to do.

And last but not least, have a friend wear it with you!! I have a friend that also loves our culture and she motivates me to continue learning about and representing our country boldly and unapologetically!!

I am Sudanese-American, I don’t belong to either Sudan but to both of them. Both sides are facing extreme hunger, political oppression, genocide and much more. I would like to urge you to do your research and find ways to support Sudan whether it be awareness donations or something else. Help the Sudanese people please.

... Read moreNavigating cultural comfort in a predominantly different society can be challenging but rewarding. Embracing your cultural clothing is not just about personal expression; it reflects deeper connections to your heritage. Here are some additional tips to help you feel at ease: 1. **Educate Others**: Sometimes, people stare out of ignorance rather than malice. By sharing the significance and beauty of your cultural clothing, you help foster understanding and respect. 2. **Join Community Groups**: Connect with others who share similar cultural backgrounds. Groups can offer solidarity and a safe space to discuss experiences, challenges, and celebrations related to your culture. 3. **Social Media Advocacy**: Use platforms like Lemon8 to share your cultural experiences. Highlight the meanings behind your clothing and encourage others to respect and learn about diverse traditions. 4. **Cultural Events**: Attend cultural festivals or events that celebrate your heritage. These gatherings not only strengthen your connection to your culture but also provide a supportive environment for expressing it. 5. **Self-care and Reflection**: Regularly reflect on your cultural identity and self-perception. Engaging in self-care can help you maintain a positive outlook and deeper appreciation for your roots. Embrace being a part of two worlds, as this can enrich your life and the lives of those around you.
