NS is a 2-year financial pause button, unless…

1. Compound wealth

If you wait until you ORD, finish university, and land a corporate job at 25/26 to start investing.

You’re cooked🫪. You aren’t just losing time, you lose the effect of compounding.

I literally just let my money work for me while I sleep in bunk

2. To beat/combat inflation (protect against purchasing power)

If you decide to save a portion of your allowance in a standard bank with a rate of 0.05% interest, you are actively losing money every day:(

Look at prices of a double cheeseburger gang. That shit has gone up in price every year. Prices keep climbing yet your cash stays flat

Investing is just a financial defence to make sure your money keeps its value over time and appreciate

3. Improve your network

Sounds cliche like the, “your network is your networth”

But the moment you start tracking markets, news, market sentiments. You stop talking about brainless brainrots and start having conservations about cash kaching.

You naturally start attracting people who likes it too. Forward thinking people who are also trying to get money. You’re not only building a portfolio but upgrading the room you sit in

4. congrats

... Read moreWhen facing a 2-year financial pause during National Service (NS), many young adults worry about falling behind financially. From my own experience, starting to invest even during this period can prevent the loss of compound wealth that occurs when money just sits idle. The key is to allocate a manageable portion of your limited income wisely — even small, consistent investments add up over time due to compounding interest. In addition to growing your wealth, investing acts as a valuable shield against inflation. For example, simply saving money in a low-interest bank account with rates around 0.05% yearly actually decreases your purchasing power as prices rise. I’ve noticed inflation impacting everyday items like fast food prices consistently going up; protecting your money means preserving what it can buy in the future. Another meaningful benefit I’ve found is the network boost that comes from engaging with investment communities. Tracking market trends, news, and engaging in discussions shifts your mindset and connects you with forward-thinking people who prioritize financial growth. This interaction has helped me stay motivated and expand my knowledge far beyond just numbers on a screen. Although NS feels like a break from normal life progression, embracing investment strategies during this time sets up a strong foundation for your financial future. Utilizing platforms like Webull and IBKR, recommended in investment circles, allows for flexible and beginner-friendly options. Don’t wait until 25 or 26 to start—your best investment is the time you start now, no matter how small. Ultimately, investing during NS is not just about money; it's about building habits, confidence, and networks that stay with you for life. If you’re interested, joining communities such as telegram investment groups or following experienced investors can offer guidance and peer support to learn and grow together.
