How do bus captains learn routes?

I’d like to share how bus captains like myself learn bus routes. Some of the senior captains I work with know more than 30 routes, which is honestly quite insane to me. I definitely aspire to reach that level one day.
In this post, I’ll share a few ways bus captains familiarise ourselves with routes, and also the method I personally use when learning new ones (hint: i use method 3 the most)
I recently started driving in the west of Singapore, which was quite unfamiliar to me at first. Over the past 3 months, I’ve already operated close to 12 different routes, and it has been a really interesting learning experience so far.

Learning bus routes is a fascinating challenge that requires patience, attention to detail, and practical strategies. From my personal experience and insights shared by seasoned bus captains, one of the most effective ways to master a route is by combining different learning techniques. Method #1 involves riding the entire route end to end. Although time-consuming, this provides firsthand experience of the route's flow, key stops, and traffic conditions. It helps captains understand timing and anticipate obstacles. Method #2 focuses on formal route training sessions where captains receive guidance and tips on navigating tricky parts of the route, customer service expectations, and safety procedures. However, the most efficient method many captains prefer, including myself, is Method #3: leveraging technology such as timelapse videos and route tracing apps like BusRouter.sg. Watching timelapse footage allows you to visualize each stop, understand route turns, and timing without physically being on the bus. Tracing the route on interactive maps further solidifies memory by linking stops to landmarks and bus interchanges such as Bukit Batok and Tengah Interchange. Balancing these learning methods with real driving experience helps build confidence and speeds up route familiarization. Managing up to 30 routes, as some senior captains do, may seem daunting but becomes achievable by consistently applying these techniques and learning from everyday practice. Sharing this ongoing journey highlights the behind-the-scenes efforts bus captains invest to ensure smooth and reliable service for commuters across Singapore.
