Being silly

I mean, who needs a pile of proper dog toys and stuffed animals when you have a perfectly good bed to wrestle with, right? She's always got that mischievous sparkle in her eyes. I've often wondered why she, and other dogs, get such a kick out of playing with things that aren't technically 'toys.' I think part of it is just their natural playful instinct. Dogs are curious creatures, and for a small dog like Beans, everything can be an exciting discovery. A bed, with its soft, squishy texture, probably feels amazing to bite and shake! It’s like a giant, soft wrestling buddy. Sometimes, I think it's also a way for her to get my attention. If she starts tugging at her bed, I'm bound to react, even if it's just to playfully tell her, "That's your bed, silly!" Playing is incredibly important for dogs, both for their physical health and mental stimulation. For dogs like Beans, who have a lot of energy, playtime helps them burn off steam and keeps them from getting bored. Boredom can sometimes lead to destructive behaviors, so I'm always trying to find new ways to engage her. We love a good game of fetch with her tennis ball, and she adores her squeaky plush toys. But sometimes, even with a whole basket of options, the 'forbidden' toy (like her bed!) is the most appealing! One thing I've learned is how to gently redirect her play. Instead of just saying "no" to the bed-as-toy game, I'll grab one of her actual toys – maybe her rope or a durable chew toy – and try to get her interested in that instead. Often, she'll happily switch over, especially if I make it a fun interaction with me. It’s all about making the right choice more exciting than the wrong one. I've also noticed that different types of play fulfill different needs. Some days, she wants to chase and retrieve, other days she just wants to chew quietly, and then there are times she wants to engage in a playful tug-of-war. Understanding these different play styles helps me pick the best toys and activities for her. For a dog that loves to 'wrestle' her bed, a durable tug toy or a puzzle toy that dispenses treats can be a fantastic alternative. Ultimately, these silly moments, like Beans trying to turn her bed into a toy, are what make pet ownership so joyous. It’s these quirks and individual personalities that we fall in love with. It’s a constant reminder of how much fun and laughter a small, fluffy dog can bring into your life. Every day is an adventure with her, full of playful discoveries, even if it means her bed occasionally doubles as a wrestling ring. It's all part of the unique bond we share!
