JB Food Trip Diaries: The Ultimate Weekend Food Escape 🇲🇾✨

1. Fried Oyster 新山耗煎 🦪

The oysters are fresh, huge and super succulent, every bite tastes briny and sweet without any fishiness.

What really makes this place stand out is how generous they are with the oysters. Most spots give you tiny pieces here and there, but this one loads the plate with plump oysters that actually satisfy. Paired with their spicy chilli, it’s honestly the kind of food I’ll willingly cross the causeway for again and again.

You have to send them a text in WA at +60 11-5683 6837 to book a slot for collection. Strictly by appointment only.

*Do note that parking around the stall area, especially near the police station, is at your own risk unless you want your car to be towed and that will be the most exp oyster omelette ever. Speaking from experience here 😅

Close on every Thursday, Sunday and Monday.

Address: Jalan Meldrum, Bandar Johor Bahru, 80000 Johor Bahru, Johor, 马来西亚

2. Kedai Kopi Xuu Yau 品苑云吞面

Kedai Jopi Xuu’s wanton mee is seriously so addictive 🤤 The noodles are not the soft soggy kind, they’ve got a really nice chewy bite and soak up the sauce perfectly. Simple but super satisfying, especially with the thick char siew slices and wantons on the side.

Open daily 6:30am to 4pm

Address: 18, Jalan Sutera, Taman Sentosa, 80150 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

3. Bread and Better Bakery

Bread & Better Bakery’s freshly baked shio pan is dangerously addictive 🥹 The bread is soft and fluffy inside with a light crisp on the outside, and that buttery salty flavour makes it impossible to stop at just one. Definitely recommend trying the Original for that classic buttery goodness, and the Mentaiko one if you like something richer and more savoury. Best eaten fresh and warm straight out of the bakery.

Open daily 9am to 8pm

*This bakery is nearby Hai kah lang

Address: 1, Jalan Kasa 7, Taman Sentosa, 80150 Johor Bahru, Johor Darul Ta’zim, Malaysia

4. Hai Kah Lang 海角人

The fish was incredibly fresh and the soup was rich, flavourful, and infused with a fragrant hint of 花雕酒 that made it especially comforting. It’s a perfect spot for groups, as the dishes are ideal for sharing and enjoying together. The oysters were fresh and delicious too, though quantities are limited, so it’s best to order early. The restaurant is clean, air-conditioned, and provides a comfortable dining environment, making it a great place for a family gathering or meal with friends 🐟🦪

Open daily 8am

Address: 173 Jalan Sutera, Taman Sentosa, 80150 Johor bahru, Johor Darul Ta'zim

5. Hai Kee Seafood Restaurant 海记

Hai Kee Seafood remains one of my favourite go-to spots whenever I’m craving seafood in JB. Their cereal crayfish is easily one of the best I’ve had! It's crispy, fragrant, buttery and packed with that addictive cereal crunch. The pepper crab is another must-order, with fresh, meaty crab coated in a rich and flavourful pepper sauce that isn’t overly spicy. Consistently fresh seafood, satisfying flavors and affordable prices keep me coming back time and time again 🦞🦀

Close on every Thursday

Address: Hawker centre, No21, Jalan Badik 1, Taman Sri Tebrau, 80050 Johor Bahru, Johor Darul Ta'zim, Malaysia

6. Nasi Lemak Hantu Baru

I initially thought Nasi Lemak Hantu had gone through a renovation, only to realise that the original stall (which didn’t have the word “Baru” in its name) has been replaced by Nasi Lemak Hantu Baru.

Thankfully, the food is just as satisfying! Their nasi lemak is absolutely to die for, with fragrant rice and all the classic accompaniments done right. The mee goreng is incredibly sedap, so good that you’ll happily eat it for supper even when you know it’s super sinful. And the chilli sauce? It’s the star of the show! It's rich, spicy and packed with flavour. It’s the kind of sambal that leaves you craving it long after the meal is over and already planning your next visit 🌶️🍛

Open daily 4pm to 2am

Address: 141, Jalan Sri Pelangi, Taman Pelangi, 80400 Johor Bahru, Johor Darul Ta'zim, Malaysia

Johor Bahru

... Read moreDuring my many visits to Johor Bahru, what always excites me the most is the incredible food variety packed into this city. The fresh fried oysters at Medan Selera Meldrum Walk, for example, are not just large and juicy, but truly embody the perfect briny sweetness that seafood lovers crave. The fact that they require a WhatsApp booking ahead of time shows how popular this spot is – definitely a testament to quality and exclusivity. Kedai Kopi Xuu Yau's wanton mee holds a special place in my heart. The noodles are chewy and firm, which makes every bite perfectly textured and soaked with tasty sauce. This is the type of simple comfort food that feels nostalgic and invigorating all at once. The thick char siew slices and plump wantons add extra satisfaction. One early morning here sets a great tone for the day. Bread & Better Bakery offers freshly baked shio pan breads that are addictive, thanks to their fluffy interiors and lightly crisp buttery crusts. I recommend trying their Mentaiko version if you're after something rich and savory – a nice twist that many travelers might overlook. Eating it straight from the oven is a little moment of pure joy. At Hai Kah Lang, the fish soup infused with Chinese Hua Diao wine creates a fragrant, warming experience ideal for group dining. Their fresh oysters, although limited in quantity, are a delight when you manage to get your order in early. The clean and air-conditioned environment makes it a perfect spot for family and friends to gather comfortably. Hai Kee Seafood's cereal crayfish and pepper crab instantly become crowd favorites. The crunchy texture of the crayfish coated with a buttery cereal topping is so satisfying. The pepper crab, coated in a rich but not overwhelming spice, offers a flavorful seafood experience that keeps locals and visitors returning repeatedly. Nasi Lemak Hantu Baru blew me away with its fragrant coconut rice and perfectly balanced accompaniments. The chili sauce (sambal) is the star here—rich, spicy, and lingering in a way that draws you back for more even after you've finished your meal. Their mee goreng is also indulgently good for a late-night craving. When planning a weekend food trip to JB, it’s best to plan ahead due to some spots requiring pre-orders or having limited operating days. This itinerary offers not just food but a full sensory experience that highlights Johor Bahru’s dynamic food culture. Whether you're a casual traveler or a dedicated foodie, these stops provide a perfect glimpse into JB’s culinary heart and soul. Save this guide and start your own food adventure in Johor Bahru soon!
