The One Prep Step I Never Skip: Creating Porosity ✨💅

If your gel polish keeps peeling or lifting way too soon, let’s be real... it’s probably not your polish. It’s your prep! 🤫

A lot of people think doing your nails is just about slapping on the color, but the real magic happens before the bottle even opens. For me, gently removing the natural shine to create adhesion channels is an absolute must.

Why is it such a game-changer? 🤔

Our natural nails are smooth and produce oils. If you apply gel or acrylic directly onto a shiny nail, the product has nothing to hold onto, so it pops right off. By gently using a buffer, we create a microscopic "porous" surface. The product seeps into those tiny grooves and—boom!—locks in place for weeks. 🦾

⚠️ Golden Rule: Keep it light and gentle! We’re only trying to remove the shine, not thin out or damage your natural nail.

Drop a comment below: are you already doing this, or were you today years old when you found out? 👇💬

... Read moreFrom my personal experience, mastering the nail prep step of creating porosity truly changed the game for my gel manicures. Before I understood the importance of gently buffing the nail surface to remove only the shine, I often found my gel polish lifting within just a few days. It wasn’t until I started using a fine-grit buffer—something around 180/240 grit—that I noticed a significant difference in polish adhesion. The key is to approach this step with care: light, even strokes that only eliminate the glossy layer without sanding down the natural nail too much. Over-filing can damage the nail plate, leading to sensitivity and even breakage. Under-filing, on the other hand, leaves shiny spots that cause premature lifting because the base coat can’t grip properly. Creating porosity essentially means you're making tiny grooves the product can cling to. Think of it like a magnet—without those micro-textures, the gel struggles to stick, and your beautiful nails start peeling off early. This tip helped me maintain flawless gel nails for up to two weeks or more, even when doing household chores or using my hands a lot. I also found that using a buffer specifically designed for this purpose, such as the ones branded at a 180/240 grit level, provides just the right amount of abrasion. It’s gentle enough not to thin out the nail but effective in removing oils and natural shine. Always finish with a clean, dust-free surface before applying base coats or gels. Another pro tip is to make this a routine every time you do your nails rather than skipping it to save time. It adds only a few minutes but significantly boosts your manicure’s durability and appearance. In summary, creating porosity isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s an essential step for anyone wanting longer-lasting press-ons, gel, or acrylic nails. If you’ve been struggling with premature nail lifting or peeling, I highly recommend incorporating this gentle buffing step into your nail prep routine. Your nails will thank you, and so will your wallet by avoiding frequent redo sessions!
