... Read moreOh my goodness, if you're planning a trip to Kinosaki Onsen, you absolutely must try to experience it during autumn! I recently visited, and the scenery was simply breathtaking. Imagine strolling along the willow-lined Otani River, the main canal that winds through the town, with every tree ablaze in vibrant reds, oranges, and golds. It’s like stepping into a living postcard. The iconic stone bridges, reflecting in the calm water, are just picture-perfect, especially when framed by that gorgeous autumn foliage. I spent hours just wandering, taking photos, and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. The air has that wonderful crispness that only autumn brings, making the whole experience even more refreshing. For anyone wondering if Kinosaki Onsen is worth it in autumn, I can tell you firsthand, it totally is! The crisp air makes soaking in the outdoor onsen even more invigorating. I loved hopping between the seven public bathhouses, feeling the warmth against the cool autumn breeze. There's nothing quite like relaxing in an open-air bath while surrounded by the gentle rustle of falling leaves. My favorite part was definitely an evening walk along the canal; the traditional lanterns glow softly, illuminating the magnificent autumn leaves, creating such a romantic and serene atmosphere. Don't forget your camera, because every corner offers an Instagram-worthy shot, especially around Ichino-yu and Goshono-yu, where the canal views are particularly stunning. Many people ask if Kinosaki Onsen can be done as a day trip. While you could technically visit for a day to experience a few onsen and the canal, I honestly believe you need more time to truly soak it all in. My 3-day itinerary, which I've shared, felt like the perfect amount of time to explore the town without rushing. It allowed me to fully appreciate the peaceful pace of life, enjoy delicious local cuisine like fresh seafood from the Sea of Japan, and really relax in the various hot springs. I also managed to explore some of the surrounding areas, which you might miss on a shorter trip. If you're short on time, even a single night would give you a much richer experience than just a day trip, letting you enjoy the morning and evening ambiance when the crowds are thinner. Waking up in a traditional ryokan, donning your yukata, and taking a morning stroll by the canal as the autumn sun rises is an unforgettable memory. Trust me, you'll want to linger and immerse yourself in this magical autumn wonderland. The canal in autumn is truly something special, and I’m already dreaming of my next visit! It’s the perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural immersion, and pure relaxation.
