I deleted TikTok⦠why?
⢠I was on it 24/7
I literally think I used it as a means of escape. I basically dissociated my days away watching TikTokās without moving or accomplishing anything.
⢠ADs, transparency, and beauty standards
I started to feel like every other video was an ad for the TikTok shop or a beauty product or some unnecessary thing! Why? I ended up spending money multiple times and regretting after. I felt like creators were getting sneakier about ads too.. it became hard to tell when someone was promoting something because they liked it or for money. And lastly the push to buy so many beauty products that target vulnerable and insecure people like me. I am sick of feeling like I need the newest hair, skin, teeth whatever.
⢠I have 0 hobbies
I would love to get out of the house again. Iām hoping that by deleting the app from my phone will help me get back outside, making art, and connecting with people again.
In today's digital age, many individuals find themselves grappling with their relationship with social media platforms like TikTok. While these apps can be entertaining, they often leave users feeling drained or even addicted. A study by Pew Research Center reveals that a significant number of teens and young adults frequently feel overwhelmed by online advertisements, culminating in anxiety and lack of authenticity in their interactions. The phenomenon of constant ad bombardment can lead to impulsive spending, especially when influencers promote products without clear distinctions between genuine endorsements and paid promotions. This feeling of deception can be particularly damaging for those already vulnerable to societal pressures regarding beauty and self-image. The urge to purchase the latest beauty products can make individuals feel inadequate if they do not conform to ever-shifting beauty standards set by social media. Moreover, disconnecting from apps like TikTok can create space for individuals to explore real-life hobbies and interests. Engaging in offline activities fosters genuine connections and a sense of community, which screens cannot replicate. Whether it's painting, hiking, or even reading, rediscovering these passions can enhance well-being and mental health. As users assess their social media consumption, many are embracing initiatives like #lessscreentime and focusing on mindfulness practices. These movements encourage self-reflection and help individuals regain control of their time and mental health. By recognizing the potential adverse effects of social media and making conscious choices about app usage, individuals can pave the way for a more balanced and fulfilling lifestyle.
