tips on how to look more alternative (on a budget)

hi guys! here are my tips on how you can look more alternative :)

🖤 tip 1: layering!

don’t be afraid to over-layer! layer your clothes, your accessories, whatever you can think of, get creative! i layer my necklaces, rings, shirts, pants, belts, & even my arm sleeves

🖤 tip 2: hair accessories

try some unique hair accessories like bandanas & head scarfs!

🖤 tip 3: dress up your bag

add some pins & bag buddies or charms to your fav bags!

🖤 tip 4: buy unique bags

speaking of bags! get creative with them! try some denim bags, bags with chains, bags with rips, etc!

🖤 tip 5: silver rings & edgy nails

try lots of silver rings & some edgy nails. they don’t have to be black nails, they could be dark red, dark blue, dark green, gray, silver, etc!

🖤 tip 6: layered necklaces

don’t just wear one necklace! wear several! & throw in some cool bracelets & arm cuffs too if you can :)

🖤 tip 7: be you!

most importantly, don’t forget to be yourself! wear what you want to wear. don’t worry about what others might say or think. what’s important is how you FEEL

... Read moreHey everyone! So, you've got the initial tips for looking alternative on a budget, but let's dive even deeper into truly embodying that edgy vibe without emptying your wallet. When I first started exploring alternative fashion, I realized it's not just about clothes; it's about an attitude and a creative approach to personal style. It's truly empowering to curate a look that feels authentic to you. One of my biggest discoveries was the power of thrifting. Seriously, thrift stores are treasure troves for unique pieces that can instantly elevate your alternative look. I've found amazing vintage band tees, oversized flannel shirts perfect for layering, and even some cool denim jackets that I've customized with patches and pins. Speaking of customization, don't underestimate DIY! Adding spikes to a collar, ripping jeans strategically, or even bleaching certain fabrics can give you that one-of-a-kind alternative edge. It’s super satisfying to wear something you’ve personalized, and it's a fantastic way to acquire truly unique bags or clothing items. Let's talk more about accessories, which are truly the secret sauce to an alternative aesthetic. Beyond the amazing silver rings and layered necklaces already mentioned, consider experimenting with chokers – velvet, studded, or O-ring styles can instantly change your neckline. Arm cuffs and bracelets, especially those with chains or darker metals, stack really well and give off a strong vibe. I've also found that statement belts, particularly those with grommets or large buckles, can pull an entire outfit together. For those edgy nails, why stick to just dark colors? Try matte finishes, subtle geometric designs, or even a tiny accent nail with a skull or star motif. These small details make a huge difference in creating a cohesive alternative style. Another game-changer for me was hair. While hair accessories like bandanas and headscarves are fantastic, don't shy away from experimenting with temporary hair dyes or even just styling your hair differently. A messy bun with some face-framing strands, or even a half-up, half-down look with braids, can instantly feel more 'alternative' than a polished style. And don't forget makeup! A bold eyeliner, darker lip colors (think deep reds, purples, or even black), or a smudged eyeshadow can really enhance your overall aesthetic and contribute to that overall alternative look. Remember, the goal is to express yourself authentically. It’s about finding pieces that resonate with you, mixing them in unexpected ways, and feeling confident in your own skin. You don't need to fully commit to one subculture; you can pull elements from grunge, punk, goth, or even indie sleaze to create something uniquely 'you'. My advice? Start small, experiment, and have fun with it. You'll be rocking your signature alternative style in no time, all while sticking to that budget! The journey to finding your perfect alternative look is an exciting one, full of creativity and self-discovery.

Layering was a popular trend when I was in high school (‘04-‘08) :) I recommend DIY-ing. Dye your clothes, sew on patches, things like that. I loved drawing on my shoes and I’d have my friends draw on my pants.
