Buy or Bye? 🤔 my honest thoughts on my jewelry! ⛓️💎
i have bought quite a few necklaces from a few different brands now, all supposedly “surgical grade stainless steel”. i am very sensitive to some metals so its very important that i get pure stainless steel or silver or gold!
here is what i think of all of the brands i’ve purchased from!
vitaly:
i worship this brand 😹 not really but i swear by their jewelry! it is the most luxurious high quality feeling jewelry ive ever held! i have worn their necklaces in the shower, at the gym, to sleep, etc & never once have they tarnished or broken or anything! 🖤
mobdark:
this brand has some really cool chains, don’t get me wrong. but unfortunately even though they are advertised as surgical grade stainless steel, the jewelry does eventually tarnish. which is very disappointing. the metal also feels very lightweight & cheap.
minga london:
this is a brand i love for their clothes, but i also bought a necklace stack from them! so far it has held up beautifully for me & the quality feels great!
amazon:
i had hopes that i could find some cheaper jewelry options from amazon that would work for me but unfortunately this was not the case 🥲 it tarnishes & makes my skin irritated even though they advertise as hypoallergenic!
... Read moreIt's completely understandable to want to know if your favorite jewelry pieces will stand the test of time, especially when investing in new accessories! Many of us have experienced the disappointment of a beautiful necklace or bracelet tarnishing quickly, or even worse, causing skin irritation despite claims of being 'hypoallergenic' or 'surgical grade stainless steel.' My personal journey with jewelry has taught me a lot about what to look for and what to avoid, and it's clear that not all metals are created equal, even if they share similar descriptions.
When you're searching for reviews about specific brands and their jewelry's tendency to tarnish or break, you're likely looking for reassurance about durability and skin compatibility. While I haven't personally tried every jewelry line out there, the principles of evaluating quality remain consistent across brands. For instance, 'surgical grade stainless steel' is often touted for its durability and hypoallergenic properties, but as I've found, the actual quality can vary significantly. Some pieces truly are high quality and resistant to daily wear, showers, and even gym sessions, while others quickly disappoint and can even cause a rash.
To avoid tarnishing, consider the base metal and plating. Solid gold and pure silver (though silver can tarnish, it's easily cleaned) are generally excellent choices. Gold-plated or silver-plated items, while affordable, can wear down over time, exposing the base metal which may then tarnish or cause irritation. Stainless steel, especially 316L surgical grade, is renowned for its resistance to rust, corrosion, and tarnishing. However, the manufacturing process and any coatings applied can impact its longevity. Always look for genuine certifications or detailed material descriptions from reputable sellers to ensure you're getting what's advertised.
Beyond the material, how you care for your jewelry plays a huge role. Simple habits like removing necklaces before showering, swimming, or exercising can drastically extend their life. Moisture and chemicals (like those in lotions, perfumes, and sweat) are major culprits behind tarnishing and dullness. Storing your jewelry properly – in a dry, airtight bag or box – can also prevent oxidation and scratches. Even 'high quality' pieces benefit from regular cleaning with a soft cloth and mild soap. This attention to detail can help keep your favorite chains gleaming, whether they are a cherished gift or a new find from any brand.
When reading reviews, pay close attention to specifics about wear, sensitivity, and how long the jewelry has lasted for others. Look for mentions of tarnishing, green skin, or allergic reactions, especially if the product claims to be hypoallergenic. Negative reviews, while sometimes disheartening, can be incredibly informative. They often highlight common problems that might not be immediately apparent from product descriptions alone. Ultimately, finding jewelry that truly works for you means balancing aesthetics with practical considerations like material quality, durability, and how it performs against your skin type. It's all about making informed choices to ensure your pieces bring joy, not irritation!
check out hard jewelry!! im also super sensitive to metals but ive never had any issues with their stainless steel or their steeling silver!! and they match your jewelry aesthetic
