Millie is back searching for another job to keep herself afloat. Out of blue, she gets a call from Mr. Garrick offering her a housekeeping position. Weeks pass without her meeting Mrs. Garrick, and the longer that goes on, the more suspicious Millie becomes. Eventually, she catches a glimpse of Mrs. Garrick and decides she needs to step in and help.
I’ve always admired Millie’s morals, but she tested my patience in this book. She missed obvious warning signs, refused help when it was offered, and pushed someone away who had proven trustworthy – only to confide in someone clearly against her. Her half-hearted snooping and indecisive actions made me want to shake her. Many of her decisions felt out of character, though admittedly, that’s part of what kept the tension going.
Part two, told from Mrs. Garrick’s perspective, was both predictable and shocking. The broad strokes of the twist were easy to see coming, but her reasoning for what she did was jaw-dropping. I despised her selfishness, yet I couldn’t help but be impressed by her cunning. Pulling off something that elaborate takes an unsettling level of intelligence.
Freida McFadden excels at layering multiple twists without losing the core plot. Mrs. Garrick's backstory, paired with one truly unexpected move from another character, is what made this a 5-star read for me.
Side note🎵: While this is fiction, it stirred strong feelings about the reality of abuse cases. Some victims are too afraid to speak up, while others go unheard because false claims have made people doubt. People can, and sometimes do, lie for their own gain, no matter who they hurt in the process. Lying about something so serious isn’t just cruel, it’s destructive.
