🇲🇾 JB cafes: where did I get my ☕️
Who doesn’t love Instagram-worthy cafes?
You should see how JB looks like on my Google Maps 🗺️. I’ve pinned 📌 one too many ‘want-to visit’ places and slowly ticking them off my list.
In my most recent trip across the Causeway, I managed to visit four cafes for my caffeine fix. Of course, the aesthetics played a main role.
Below’s a really long review of the four cafes that nobody asked for 😅
1️⃣ Space Cafe
📍 Holiday Villa, across from KSL
Minimalistic spot with a range of drinks to suit anyone who steps through their doors: think basic, think fancy. Visited on a weekday afternoon just after lunch ~1.30pm and it wasn’t crowded. Lots of PowerPoints around, offers free wifi. Great spot for meeting friends and/or business associates and even for remote working.
☕ ️ Orange Americano: single origin coffee and fresh orange juice, topped lime milk foam. RM18.
Tip: Ask for it unsweetened with syrup.
☕️ Caramel cinnamon latte: single origin coffee, brown sugar, milk and cinnamon powder, topped with a dehydrated apple slice and cinnamon stick. RM18.
This one’s perfect for those with a sweet tooth.
🥐 Ordered pastries on the side so we had a kouigaman amann and a chocolate banana croissant (not pictured). Chocolate banana croissant was pretty decent.
Tip: Have a cuppa before/after your massage at Thai Odyssey on the 6th storey of the building.
2️⃣ Soil JB
📍 Eco Springs Lab
This area has a few gram-worthy cafes and Soil is one of them. Housed in a standalone building. The exterior makes for great social media pictures. Believe me, I’m one of the guilty ones asking numerous shots.
☕️ Iced americano: basic but tastes rather watered down.
🥐 Some of their bakes look really familiar!? Like I saw the kouigaman amann and chocolate banana croissant from Space here 🤔 Ordered a canele and a viennois red bean butter. The former was really addictive and went well with the iced americano. The latter didn’t quite measure up as much.
3️⃣ September
📍 Eco Palladium, across the road from Eco Springs
Possibly the prettiest cafe of the four?! Very feminine-Japanese vibes. Walked into four girls taking a gazillion photos together and accidentally photobombed them. My bad 🥲
🍰 The cakes on display looked amazing but we didn’t have enough belly space to order more than one so we had to settle for — the most popular item: Watermelon Lychee Cake. Wow, are watermelons in season or what? Why are they incredibly sweet!? 🤩
Tip: if you’ve got more space for dessert, try the yammilicious slice too. Said to be equally popular.
☕️ I’m a huge coffee drinker so naturally, I’d gravitate towards that kind of caffeine. Coffee was better than Soil. Their iced teas looked delicious but didn’t get to try.
4️⃣ Offee Coffee
📍 Next to The Replacement, same neighbourhood as banana cake Kingdom
My distant memory of this place was another cafe that has since shut. Anyone remembers Kone? This cafe screams minimalist and lots of attention is given to their drinks.
☕️ I had yet another coffee orange and this one electrifies. The orange juice is clearly squeezed from fresh oranges because it was sour-sweet, so the coffee comes naturally sweetened. By far the best coffee I’ve had among the four cafes.
🥐 pain au chocolat (not pictured) was crispy and flaky. Husband 10/10 recommends.
Time to add these to your JB cafe lists! 🔖

If you’re planning a cafe trip in Johor Bahru, here are some helpful tips to make the most of your experience. Many of these cafes not only serve great coffee but also focus heavily on aesthetics, so bring your camera or phone fully charged to capture those Instagram-worthy shots. At Space Cafe, the free wifi and ample power outlets make it ideal if you want to get some remote work done while enjoying your coffee. Don’t hesitate to ask the barista to customize your drinks, like requesting the Orange Americano unsweetened to suit your taste. Soil JB is a gem for those who enjoy casual vibes with a unique selection of baked goods. I noticed some familiar pastries that were just as tempting here as at Space Cafe. If you’re curious about local cafe scenes, checking out these spots around Eco Springs Lab offers a lovely mix of scenery and flavors. September offers a distinctly Japanese-inspired feminine vibe and stunning desserts. The Watermelon Lychee Cake was incredibly refreshing, especially during warmer weather. If you have a sweet tooth and some extra appetite, their Yammilicious slice is highly recommended by locals. Offee Coffee takes great care in their drink preparation, particularly their Coffee Orange, which blends fresh-squeezed orange juice with coffee for a delightful sour-sweet balance. Pair it with their crispy and flaky pain au chocolat for a satisfying treat. For those who want to explore more JB cafes, consider visiting spots near KSL or the bustling neighborhoods famous for cafe hopping. Each place has its own unique charm, whether it’s minimalist décor, eco-friendly vibes, or innovative drink concoctions. Don’t forget to check the opening hours and peak times to avoid large crowds, especially during weekends. Early afternoons on weekdays tend to be quieter and perfect for a relaxed visit. Happy cafe hopping and coffee sipping in JB!
