Christmas Markets 🇩🇪vs🇨🇿 - who did it better?

Spent Christmas in Dresden and New Year’s in Prague, chasing Christmas market vibes — and here’s what I wish someone told me before the trip:

• Yes, they’re magical

• No, not all are worth visiting

• And (no) surprise: the country literally shuts down on Christmas Eve

DRESDEN: Christmas Market Capital?

Kinda.

I visited 3 days before Christmas and left for Prague, day after Boxing Day

‼️Most markets close by Dec 23. Some bigger ones stay open till noon on Dec 24. After that? Nada till the 27th.

Now, I get it. Christmas in Europe sounds dreamy — but Germany does things differently. Christmas Eve (24th Dec) is the actual big deal here. That’s when families gather, open presents, eat, and when the whole city just… stops. Even supermarkets. So if you didn’t stock up on food or book a restaurant in advance, good luck finding dinner!

We stayed near the historic part of Dresden and checked out a bunch of markets.

590th Dresden Striezelmarkt – MUST-VIST

Oldest Christmas market in Germany, right in the city centre. Massive, festive, and packed.

• Don’t expect loud carols - the vibe is surprisingly chill

• Do expect great food - I had an incredible bratwurst and brot (bread) for just €7 🌭

• Must-try: Glühwein (hot mulled wine). With or without that extra shot of alcohol — you decide 🍷

• Bonus: The souvenir mugs you get your drinks in are returnable (for a deposit refund), but honestly? Some of them are so pretty, you might just want to keep them.

Medieval Christmas Market at Stallhof

This has got to be my favourite Christmas market of all! If you visit on a weekday, entrance is free. On weekends, they charge an entrance fee of €5. Definitely smaller, themed, and the mugs here? Gorgeous ceramic ones. We brought one home. Loved the vibes. The stallholders even dressed according to theme! We also had the best Applesauce and rosti here. So expensive but so good!

Frauenkirche Dresden Markets

There were two markets around the church: Weihnachtsmarkt "Advent auf dem Neumarkt" just outside the church, and the other Traditional Christmas market at the Frauenkirche along Münzgasse. The vibes were 💯. Barely heard any music because it was packed with people, and we joined friends and their extended family to hang out for drinks and dinner. At a particular stall near the clock, they serve fireball-style shots (with actual flames, sugar caramelising over the glass). Wild. But 40% alcohol. Don’t drink on an empty stomach.

Romantic Market along @Prager Str. (Spoiler: Not That Romantic)

Tiny skating rink.

Loud techno music.

Zero Christmas vibes.

❌❌❌ Skip.

Finnish Village (Waste of Time)

No music, barely any food, no atmosphere. Only redeeming feature? A literal fire pit. We stayed 15 minutes.

PRAGUE: New Year Vibes, but a bit overhyped

We visited right after Christmas, into early January.

Location: Old Town Square (yep, where the Astronomical Clock is)

The Prague market was still open till about Jan 6 — which aligns with the “12 Days of Christmas” — so that’s a win for late December travellers.

• Super crowded — we could barely move

• Vibes were festive, but honestly… the stalls started to feel same-same after a while

• Food was meh — Germany definitely wins on food

• We did try the famous Old Prague Ham — insanely good, but also insanely expensive.

Would I go again? Probably not. But would I say skip it entirely? Not really. If you’re in Prague over New Year’s, it’s worth checking out once — just manage expectations.

🌟 FINAL TIPS IF YOU’RE CHASING CHRISTMAS MARKET MAGIC

• Germany > Prague when it comes to food, vibes, and overall experience

• Check market schedules in advance — most close before Christmas

• Carry cash — many stalls don’t accept card, especially drink vendors

• Glühwein mugs come with a deposit — return or keep them, your choice

• Book meals early for Dec 24/25 or risk eating instant noodles …

• Don’t underestimate the cold — gloves and hot drinks are non-negotiable

Would I do it all again?

Yes — but with better planning, and maybe one less market!

👓 Christmas Eve in Dresden - city is shut!?!

... Read moreIf you’re planning a trip combining the charm of multiple Christmas markets, it’s worth noting how differently Germany and the Czech Republic celebrate this season. One interesting highlight is the medieval-themed Stallhof Advent Festival in Dresden. This market offers a unique experience with costumed vendors and ceramic mugs, which made it my personal favorite. The atmosphere feels like stepping back in time, complemented by delicious traditional treats like applesauce and rosti. It’s a wonderful place to soak in authentic holiday spirit that is sometimes lost in more commercial markets. On the other hand, Prague’s Old Town Square market keeps the festivities going longer, staying open until early January. If you’re visiting during the Twelve Days of Christmas, this is a plus. However, the huge crowds and repetitive food stalls mean it warrants just one visit to get the full experience rather than multiple nights. A common thread throughout these markets is the importance of planning. Many stalls prefer cash, so having some euros on hand will make your experience smoother. Also, markets in Dresden mostly close before Christmas Eve because that day is when the city truly pauses for family time. If you don’t prepare your meals or snacks ahead, you might find it tough to eat out. Packing warm clothes is essential too—gloves and cozy scarves are a must as you stroll and enjoy hot Glühwein. Speaking of Glühwein, collecting souvenir mugs from each market is a delightful tradition. Some mugs are so beautiful that many visitors choose to keep them as festive memories. Finally, if your itinerary includes Zurich or other renowned European Christmas spots, keep in mind that each city offers its distinct atmosphere and specialties. From enchanting castle decorations that sing carols to unique regional delicacies, every destination adds something special to your holiday adventure.
