Pile Gate- Saint Blaise
Guarded by the watchful eye of patron St. Blaise whose legend comes from appearing to a praying priest to reveal true intentions of Venice of conquering Dubrovnik land. Immediately after the vision, the priest ran to the Senate and pleaded that the Dubrovnik people defend their city. The vision aided in preparing defenses with the steadily approaching, silent Venetian Fleet-ultimately causing their retreat back to Italy.
The Pile Gate is not only a strategic entry point into Dubrovnik but also a symbol of resilience against foreign threats. Saint Blaise, the city’s patron saint, plays a crucial role in local folklore, especially concerning the famed Venetian siege. His legendary apparition to a priest underscores the historical tensions between Venice and Dubrovnik. The Venetian Republic, known for its maritime prowess, posed a serious threat to the independence of Dubrovnik in the late Middle Ages. In 1526, the recorded events reveal that the silent advance of the Venetian fleet prompted fear among Dubrovnik’s citizens. However, following the saint’s vision, the people rallied to fortify their defenses.
