MS Students Solve the Crime

I created a mock crime scene for my students to solve.

There were multiple roles for them to choose from:

Police

Detectives

CSI agents

Forensic Scientists

And I enjoyed putting these different careers on their minds!!

Police (students) closed off the scene and began placing evidence markers wherever they felt they should go.

Detectives and CSI agents came in to look at the evidence and find more that the police may have missed. One of the agents took photos on an instant camera while the other one bagged and labeled evidence.

Forensic scientists (students) pulled fingerprints off of all of the evidence bagged. They received protective gear to wear (gowns, goggles, masks, hair cover, gloves) and magnifying glasses, test tubes and more to create a realistic experience for them.

I also made shirts that said Police, Detectives, and CSI for the other students and everyone had on gloves. It was amazing and I have the responsibility of setting it up for two more schools next week.

The students had so much fun.

... Read moreOkay, fellow educators and parents, you have to hear about how I took my mock crime scene project to the next level! After seeing how much my students loved solving their first case, I've been brainstorming even more ways to make these mock crime scene ideas accessible and exciting for everyone. If you're looking for an unforgettable educational activity that blends science, critical thinking, and teamwork, this is it! First off, let's talk about the 'crime.' You don't need anything gruesome. For my next setup, I'm thinking of a 'stolen' valuable item – maybe a "rare artifact" from the classroom, or even the 'disappearance' of the teacher's favorite coffee mug! The key is to create a plausible, low-stakes mystery. This gives the students a clear objective: to solve a mystery! When it comes to setting up your scene, attention to detail makes all the difference. I learned that from the first time! You absolutely need caution tape – it instantly transforms any space. I drape it around the "crime area" to define boundaries, just like real police do. For 'evidence,' think everyday objects that can tell a story. I used a 'victim's' wallet with a few fake bills, a 'suspect's' dropped hat, or even a 'footprint' made from flour. Remember those numbered markers from the OCR? They are crucial! Place them next to every piece of potential evidence. This teaches students methodical collection. Another game-changer is providing proper forensic supplies. You don't need a huge budget! I gathered clear plastic bags for bagging evidence, permanent markers for labeling, and magnifying glasses. For the 'fingerprinting' element, cocoa powder works wonders on smooth surfaces, and clear tape lifts the prints perfectly onto white paper. For personal protection, simple disposable masks and gloves (latex-free if possible!) add so much to the role-playing experience. The OCR mentioned 'a table of evidence' – this is great for organizing all the collected items once they're off the scene. Here are a few more mock crime scene ideas to boost engagement: Witness Interviews: Prepare a few 'witness' statements with conflicting information to challenge their critical thinking. Suspect Profiles: Create 2-3 brief suspect profiles, each with a motive and alibi, but one with a subtle flaw. Forensic Stations: Beyond fingerprinting, you can have a 'fiber analysis' station (comparing different fabric swatches found at the scene to suspect clothing) or a 'handwriting analysis' station. Time Limit: Add a sense of urgency by giving them a time limit to present their findings. The debriefing is just as important as the investigation. After they present their theories, we discuss what went well, what was challenging, and how they used their different roles to collaborate. It’s amazing to see them connect science concepts to real-world applications. This isn't just about solving a case; it's about fostering teamwork, observational skills, and a passion for inquiry. Trust me, your students will be talking about this educational activity for weeks!
