BMW Spark plug and ignition coil service

Finally getting around to working on the new project car. It’s been busy but better late than never. Today we serviced our spark plugs with @officialngksparkplugs and coil packs.

There’s still lots to do performance wise before we can eventually get started on the exterior.

Ps: any recommendations for a new intake?

My recent spark plug and ignition coil service on my e82 coupe was just the beginning for me, and it truly highlighted how crucial fundamental maintenance is to truly get the best out of these incredible machines. When we talk about ‘evaluating’ a BMW, it’s not just about the badge; it’s about the driving experience over time, and that heavily relies on how well it's maintained. Let's get into why those spark plugs and ignition coils are so vital, especially for performance-oriented BMW engines like the N54 or N55 often found in models like my 135i. Think of spark plugs as the tiny heroes that ignite the air-fuel mixture, and the coil packs as their powerful enablers, delivering the high voltage needed. If these components are worn or failing, you'll feel it immediately: misfires, rough idling, a noticeable drop in power, and even worse fuel economy. It's like trying to run a marathon with worn-out shoes – you just won't perform your best. That's why I opted for NGK plugs; they're a trusted name in the performance world, known for their durability and consistent spark, which is essential for maintaining optimal engine health and responsiveness. Doing this kind of maintenance yourself can be incredibly satisfying, not to mention a significant cost saver compared to dealership prices. There are tons of resources online, and the BMW community is fantastic for sharing tips and tricks. But once you've got the basics covered, what's next for performance? My next step, as I mentioned, is an intake. This is where things get exciting! A good cold air intake or even a short ram setup can not only give your engine a more aggressive sound but also improve throttle response and potentially add a few horsepower by allowing the engine to breathe more freely. For N54/N55 owners, there are many options from brands like BMS, Injen, or AFE. It's all about balancing sound, performance, and filtration. Beyond the performance mods, remember that a project BMW will always appreciate consistent care. Regular oil changes with quality synthetic oil, checking and replacing PCV valves, inspecting charge pipes (which are common failure points on turbocharged BMWs), and keeping an eye on your cooling system are all part of the 'package.' Each of these small services contributes to the overall 'evaluation' of your BMW, ensuring it remains a joyous, spirited machine rather than a garage queen fraught with issues. Owning a BMW, especially a project car, is an ongoing conversation with the engineering, a dance between maintenance and exhilarating drives. It’s about understanding what makes it tick and keeping it in prime condition so you can truly enjoy its 'offer' on the road.
