Tried night shift once, it’s NOT for meeee 🤣

2024/1/4 Edited to

... Read moreRemember that feeling when you get called in to *fill-in for night shift*? Yeah, that was me recently, and let me tell you, it was a POV I quickly learned wasn't for me! I've always worked days, so when the opportunity (or rather, the necessity) arose to cover a night shift, I thought, "How bad can it be?" Turns out, for me, it was pretty challenging. The first major hurdle was the sheer disruption to my sleep schedule. I tried to prepare by sleeping in, but my body just wasn't having it. Going to bed at 8 AM and waking up in the late afternoon felt completely unnatural. I was constantly battling a sense of grogginess, feeling like I was living in a perpetual state of jet lag. My natural circadian rhythm was completely thrown off, leading to poor quality sleep even when I did manage to drift off. This sleep deprivation made it hard to focus, which is crucial when you're a respiratory therapist making critical decisions. Then there's the social aspect. While I was at work, my friends and family were winding down or asleep. When I finally got home and tried to sleep, they were starting their day. This immediate disconnect made me feel surprisingly isolated. Missing out on daytime activities, even simple things like grabbing coffee with a friend, made me realize how much I valued my regular schedule. It's not just about missing big events; it's the little, everyday connections that truly define your social life. The physical and mental toll was also significant. I found myself craving unhealthy comfort foods, probably due to the lack of proper sleep and the body trying to find quick energy. My mood felt off, and I constantly had a low-level headache. The quietness of the hospital at night, while peaceful in some ways, also felt eerie and added to a sense of loneliness. It's a stark contrast to the bustling energy of the day shift. For any nubie out there who might be new to healthcare or considering a night shift role, let me share some real talk. A 'nubie' – meaning someone new to the job or situation – will likely find the adjustment even harder. You're not just learning the ropes of a new career or department; you're also trying to rewire your entire biological clock. If night shifts are a necessity for you, try to establish a strict sleep routine on your days off too. Invest in blackout curtains, a good eye mask, and earplugs. Prioritize healthy eating and try to maintain some form of exercise. While every workplace, whether it's a busy hospital floor or a specialized clinic (or even a hypothetical 'Paulie's'!), has its unique vibe and staffing challenges, the core disadvantages of night shift largely remain the same across the board. Your experience might differ, and some people absolutely thrive on nights. They love the camaraderie, the quieter pace, or the differential pay. But for me, after that one experience, I confirmed that the night shift just isn't my jam. I'll stick to my daytime routine, thank you very much! It was an eye-opening experience, but definitely not one I'm eager to repeat.
