Cruising with kids

After our recent family cruise, where we absolutely loved gazing at the blue ocean and enjoying the views, I realized there's so much more to a truly relaxing family cruise experience than just booking it! While I shared my top tips on games, snacks, and staying hydrated, there are a few more things I've learned that can seriously level up your trip when cruising with kids. First, let's talk about pre-cruise planning and packing. Beyond the essentials, think about what makes your kids comfortable. Does your little one have a favorite blanket or stuffed animal? Pack it! I also learned to bring a small first-aid kit with children's pain relievers, band-aids, and any prescription medications. Sunscreen is non-negotiable, especially if you're heading to sunny destinations like Cabo San Lucas. And speaking of clothes, pack versatile outfits – think comfy 'MINECUR' shorts for daytime adventures and something a little nicer for dinner. Don't forget plenty of swimsuits, as kids often want to hit the pool multiple times a day! Next up, making the most of onboard activities. Cruise ships are packed with entertainment, but knowing how to navigate it with kids is key. The kids' clubs are a lifesaver! Register them early on embarkation day. My kids absolutely loved having their own age-appropriate activities and making new friends, which gave us some much-needed adult time to relax on the lounge chairs. Check the daily schedule for family-friendly shows, character meet-and-greets, and pool games. Sometimes, just finding a quiet corner in the stateroom with their favorite travel board game or card game can be just as entertaining as a big production. Dining with picky eaters can be a challenge. While cruise food is abundant, sometimes kids just want familiar favorites. Don't be afraid to ask for plain pasta or chicken tenders in the main dining room. The buffet is always a good option for variety, but I found ordering room service for a quiet breakfast in our cabin was a great way to start the day without the crowds. This also ties back to bringing your own snacks – having their absolute favorites on hand can prevent meltdowns during long waits or between meals. Finally, shore excursions and port days. While exploring new places like the rocky islands near Cabo San Lucas is exciting, remember to pace yourselves with kids. Some excursions might be too long or too tiring for little ones. We often opted for shorter, child-friendly tours, or sometimes, we just enjoyed a relaxing day on the ship when it was less crowded. If you do go ashore, bring plenty of water (using those refillable cups!) and snacks, and be prepared for spontaneous naps in the stroller or carrier. Cruising with kids truly offers unparalleled family bonding time. With a little extra planning and these practical tips, you can transform your cruise from a good vacation into an unforgettable, stress-free family adventure!
