Underrated Comedies That Deserve More Love

1. THE WRONG MISSY, 2020

⭐️Rate: 7/10

🎬Review: Not every movie is supossed to be Amarcord, casablanca or even young framkenstein. It's not sin to enjoy a simple movie, to stop the stress fron reality, to takea detour from the horrible things going on in today's world. You're wathching a Happy Madison production, with Sandler's friends, a simple plot and yes, a 50 something year old mhen dating a 35 year old woman. But i really don't understand the hate; when i want emotion i see CinemaParadiso. When i want to be really scared , i see the exorcist.... Today, i really wanted to scape,be relaxed, and maybe have one or two laughs.

I disagree with those who said: "she's so cringe, he's so flat, the script

normality from her....well i can honestly say that i've met people like that, annoying and good persons almost at the same time

It's not a great movie, but i can honestly say, i'had some fun. And the tiew really quick,

Judge some movies for what it is, not from what is suppossed to be.

2. MEET ME NEXT CHRISTMAS, 2024

🎬Review: Yes, you can predict the twists and turns of this love story from a mile aay-but isn't that exactly why we adore Christmas movies? The dramatic, over-the-top magic of holiday miracles is what makes them so endearing!

Christmas romance is Christina Milian's genre. In this movie, she takes us on a delightful Christmas escape to find the potential love of your life you crossed pathsago. It's unlikely, but that's the magic of Christmas!

Adding the Pentatonix was the perfect touch to infuse us all with the holiday spirit! This easy- going Netflix original gave me all the cozy vibes I needed. Plus, I loved ig the Black love interest bringing even more warmth to the story!

Overall, I'd say it's a solid 3 star out of 5-perfect for anyone wanting to kick back, relax, and believe in a little holiday magic!

3. PAUL, 2011

⭐️Rate: 8/10

🎬Review: I enjoyed this film quite a bit, it is a rare comedy that started kind of slowly, but continued to get more funny as it went on. Usually I find a lot of comedies start kind of fthen fade out kind of fast. This one has two Brits who are in the United States for comic con, tend all comic book, science fiction, horror and a whole heck of a lot more conventions. These particular two are into aliens and there to not only take in the sights and meet afavorite author, but to drive to some of the famous alien spots out in the west. Well they quickly run into ssome trouble with some local rednecks and then end up witnessing a very bad wreck. They go out to explpre the scene and end up meeting Paul, an alien who is apparently on the run and in the nheed of assistance. During the course of their adventure the two Brits must keep Paul hidden from government agents and also deal with crazy religious fathers and all sorts of other things one tends nd on the road. Probably why I liked this one as I always enjoy a good traveling comedy ofwhich this can

certainly be classified as one. I also enjoy watching Simon Pegg and Nick ng together as they have a good chemistry. They are a couple of the few actors who I will watch a movie specifically because they are in it. I used to have a wholeslew of actors and actresses like that, but these days not so much. The comedy is funny, like I said it started a bit slowly as I think the comic con scenes could have been a bit funnier, but it really got going onthey met up with Paul. Not much of a Seth Rogen fan, but he did a fine job as the voice of Paul. So all in all a funny comedy that kept me entertained throughout.

4. A FUTILE AND STUPID GESTURE, 2018

⭐️Rate: 8/10

🎬Review: A driven joker pushes his way through Harvard and on to comedystardom, but the fun begins to get manic ...

Clever story telling that takes a while to get the right modpd, but once it hits the American Hustle style montage pace with the '70s period look it just rolls along. Plenty ocent laughs, but with good introspection by the lead actor. I didn't know much about this guy, ahis stuff was just before my time, but I found the story really engaging, and of course thereaction of spotting a host of comedy stars at the start of their screen careerss. Biggest laugh was Chevy Chase trying to pour a drink at the parents' new mansion

The meta narrative is amusing, with a pointed reference to the souit also pulls a clever trick in setting up a shock ending for ainyone who doesn't know this man's life Only complaint is that there's no killer line. Maybe: "All you had to say was don't call me Shirley".

The performances are good all round, and the direction, editing and cheerfmusic keep it bubbling all the way through.

5. DIEDRA & LANEY ROB A TRAIN, 2017

⭐️Rate: 6/10

🎬Review: Now that Hollywood has figured out that there's money too be made with independent films, we see a lot of them, and they cost a fortune. It's not like thee old days.

Deidra & Laney Rob a Train is an old-fashioned independent - it didn't cost much by movie standards and many of the actors are unfamiliar to audieences

The mother of three goes to prison, leaving her kids to fend for themselveWhen they visit her in prison, it turns out she's having a blast not having to work. She's doing getting her nails done, and can choose between the kitchen OR the laundry. But thekids want to bail her out.

As the bills pile up, the older one, Deidra (Ashleigh Murray) decide:s to rob a train, as they live near the tracks. She drags her sister Laney (Rachel Crow) into it. They aactually are able to do it more than once and sell what they get. Then their estranged father getsinto the act. Entertaining film with some life lessons about self-esteem, bullying, and - oh, yes, stealing.

This is on Netflix streaming - check it out. You'll enjoy it.

... Read moreAs someone who loves a good laugh, I'm always on the hunt for comedies that truly stand out, especially those hidden gems that don't always get the mainstream attention they deserve. We all know the big blockbusters, but sometimes the most satisfying humor comes from unexpected places, offering a fresh perspective or a style of comedy that resonates deeply. That's why I wanted to share my thoughts on what makes an 'underrated comedy' truly special, and perhaps even a 'mature film' in its own right. For me, a mature comedy isn't just about an R-rating or adult themes, though some of my picks certainly embrace that. It's more about humor that requires a bit of life experience to fully appreciate, or stories that tackle relatable situations with a nuanced, sometimes dark, but always witty touch. These aren't necessarily films that preach or aim to be overtly inspirational, but I find that a genuinely good laugh, especially one spurred by smart writing and unique characters, can be incredibly uplifting. It inspires me to keep exploring the vast landscape of film, beyond just what's trending. Take a movie like 'Paul,' for instance. While it's a sci-fi road trip comedy, its humor isn't just slapstick; it's steeped in nerd culture references and a surprisingly heartwarming story about friendship and acceptance. It appeals to an audience that appreciates both intelligent wit and a bit of irreverence. Similarly, 'A Futile and Stupid Gesture' delves into the chaotic and brilliant minds behind National Lampoon, offering a comedic biopic that's both hilarious and insightful about the creative process – definitely a more mature watch for those interested in comedy history. I've found that streaming platforms like Netflix are treasure troves for these kinds of underrated comedies. You can stumble upon something like 'The Wrong Missy,' which might be dismissed by some, but for me, it was pure, unadulterated escapism with a surprisingly endearing core. Or 'Deidra & Laney Rob a Train,' an independent film that blends coming-of-age drama with quirky humor and unexpected life lessons. These aren't just background noise; they're films that invite you to engage with their characters and their unique comedic takes on life. So, if you're like me and you appreciate discovering films that offer more than just surface-level laughs, I highly recommend diving into this world of underrated comedies. They might not always be labeled 'inspirational,' but the joy of finding these hidden gems and the genuine laughter they provide can certainly be a wonderful source of inspiration in itself. Happy watching!
