But how do you make sure you get those truly stunning shots that make your friends say 'Wow!'? Based on my own experience and a few tips I picked up along the way, here’s my mini-guide to capturing the magic of the Florida Everglades, especially at places like Sawgrass Recreation Park. First off, wildlife is your main subject, and the star of the show has to be the American alligator. You'll see them basking on banks, gliding through the water, or even just peeking out with their eyes. For the best alligator photos, try to get down to their level if you can (safely, of course, from the airboat or designated viewing areas!). A good zoom lens is your best friend here, as you want to maintain a respectful distance. Patience is key; sometimes they just sit there, sometimes they'll open their jaws for a yawn, giving you that iconic shot. Beyond the gators, keep an eye out for the incredible birdlife. I was amazed by the variety—herons, egrets, anhingas, and even roseate spoonbills if you're lucky! Birds are often most active in the early morning or late afternoon, so if you have the flexibility, those times can offer softer light and more dynamic interactions. A fast shutter speed helps freeze their movements, especially when they're taking flight. Don't forget the landscapes! The vastness of the sawgrass prairies, the intricate mangrove tunnels, and the reflection of the sky on the water all make for breathtaking landscape shots. Try to capture the sense of scale by including a bit of the airboat in your shot, or focus on the unique textures of the water and vegetation. The golden hour (shortly after sunrise or before sunset) casts a beautiful warm glow over everything, making for truly magical pictures. Once you’re off the airboat and exploring the wildlife sanctuary, you get a unique chance for close-up photography. This is where you can really capture the intricate details of rescued animals like panthers, snakes, and even more alligators. Since these animals are in controlled environments, you can often take your time to compose your shots without worrying about them disappearing. It's a fantastic opportunity to practice portrait-style wildlife photography. A few practical tips for your photo safari: Protection: The Everglades sun can be intense, so wear a hat and use sunscreen. Also, depending on the season, mosquitoes can be an issue, so bug spray is a good idea. You don't want to be swatting bugs when you should be snapping photos! Gear: A camera with a good zoom lens (200mm or more) will be invaluable. Don't forget extra batteries and plenty of memory cards.
