Synopsis: Alex is “hell bent” on breaking Darlington out of hell (sorry, I couldn’t help myself). From solving puzzles, run ins with drug dealers, and dealing with the drama of the mystical world of the secret societies. There’s a lot of work in order to take four people to hell, bringing up challenges from everybodies past.
👍Pros : This book fleshes out some more of the characters we were introduced to in Ninth House. Pamela and Alex grow their friendship and break multiple school rules together. Abel becomes more reliable and his past is uncovered. Tripp is the comic relief but is necessary nonetheless.
This was a story that I really enjoyed and I’m excited for if/when the third book comes out.
... Read moreOkay, let's talk about Hell Bent by Leigh Bardugo – because if you're like me, you've probably been absolutely buzzing for this sequel! After diving headfirst into Alex Stern's world, I can confidently say this is a solid 5/5 read that kept me utterly captivated from start to finish. When I saw the Goodreads rating averaging around 4.14, I understood why some might feel that way, but for me, this book delivered everything I wanted and more, earning its perfect score in my personal reading journal.
What makes Hell Bent really shine, especially for fans of the first book, *Ninth House*, is how deeply it plunges us into the complex underbelly of Yale's secret societies. The dark academia vibes are stronger than ever, enveloping you in an atmosphere thick with ancient rituals, forbidden knowledge, and the ever-present threat of otherworldly forces. This isn't just a backdrop; it's a living, breathing character in itself. Leigh Bardugo truly masterfully weaves together elements of magic, demons, and even vampires, creating a unique urban fantasy world that feels both fantastical and eerily real.
The plot, revolving around Alex and her desperate mission to break Darlington out of hell, is an absolute rollercoaster. It's packed with intricate mysteries that will keep you guessing, unexpected run-ins with shady characters, and a constant sense of urgency. I particularly loved how the narrative explores the consequences of wielding such immense power and the moral ambiguities faced by Alex and her allies. It's not just about solving puzzles; it's about confronting personal demons and making impossible choices.
One of the biggest triumphs of Hell Bent is the incredible character development. While Ninth House introduced us to these fascinating individuals, this second book in the series truly allows them to grow and evolve. Watching Pamela and Alex deepen their friendship, challenging the norms of their mystical world, was incredibly satisfying. Abel's backstory being uncovered adds so much depth to his character, making him far more relatable and integral to the story. Even Tripp, as the essential comic relief, plays a crucial role in balancing the dark intensity. This book truly fleshes out their struggles and motivations, making their journey feel incredibly personal and impactful.
If you're searching for a book that offers a rich blend of dark academia, intricate mysteries, and a deep dive into the supernatural, Hell Bent is an absolute must-read. It’s perfect for those who appreciate complex world-building, morally grey characters, and a plot that doesn't shy away from dark themes. Whether you're a long-time fan of Leigh Bardugo's other works or just discovering her unique voice, this second book in the series will undoubtedly leave you eager for the next installment. It’s a compelling, adventure-filled ride that perfectly encapsulates why I adore this series.
