Half Year Check In 📚

I’ve been keeping up with my reading goals this year, and these have been the books I’ve constantly been thinking about, even months after I finished it.

🔥The City of Brass🔥

This has a few perspectives to follow so while the reader may see all of what’s happening, the characters don’t always know. There’s also times when you’re not 100% who you should root for. The descriptions are so good I felt like I was there, and the characters have flaws but are usually trying their best, and the slow burn romance is truly slow burn.

🗡️Murder Your Employer🗡️

I laughed so much through this book, it shouldn’t have been possible. I loved the narrator, the characters, and the overall vibe. Really, this is a great read for anybody who has felt frustrated by the work or has been done dirty by their boss.

🙏Paladin’s Grace🙏

I love T.Kingfisher and this series really cements that. I laughed, I felt spooked, I rooted for the romance. It’s a tad spicy and it’s with characters in their 30s. Additionally, I felt that the multiple perspectives really added to the story as a whole.

🍄Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries🍄

This series has it all and I’m getting copies for my friends. Emily is super smart and socially awkward, but she does what she thinks is right. This series had me laughing, on the edge of my seat, and overall feeling so hopeful. It’s a wonderful cozy fantasy series that I simply couldn’t put down.

👑Shield of Sparrows👑

Honestly, I’m a sucker for enemies to lovers, rebellious princesses, and unique monsters. As far as fantasy goes, this is a story with tropes that we’ve seen before -HOWEVER- the main character doesn’t know a lot going into her situation. She takes time to practice. She doesn’t like running but does it because she sees the danger around her. It felt refreshing to see a character make mistakes, practice, and still not be 100% amazing at it.

... Read moreAs we reach the mid-year mark, it's the perfect opportunity to reflect on our reading goals and the captivating stories we've encountered. This year, my reading journey has led me to some phenomenal books that have not only entertained me but also stuck with me beyond their final pages. Here’s a closer look at my top picks that have truly left a mark on my mind. One standout is 'The City of Brass' by S.A. Chakraborty, which immerses the reader in the rich tapestry of a magical world inspired by Middle Eastern folklore. Follow the life of Nahri, a resourceful young woman who discovers her innate magical talents while navigating the perilous political dynamics of the court. With its intricate plots and vivid descriptions, this novel not only provides a thrilling experience but also introduces readers to complex characters that resonate throughout the narrative. Next up is 'Murder Your Employer' by Rupert Holmes, a darkly comedic thriller that takes a creative approach to the concept of workplace conflicts. This book dives into the absurdity and frustration often found in professional environments, and through its engaging narrative, it allows readers to indulge in a mix of humor and a compelling plot about a college where students are trained in assassination. The intriguing premise coupled with well-developed characters makes it an entertaining read for those who have ever felt overburdened by their jobs. 'Paladin’s Grace' by T. Kingfisher is another gem in the fantasy genre, exploring themes of faith and love in a world where gods may fall silent. The narrative follows a paladin on a mission to uncover a murder mystery while embarking on a romantic journey that provides plenty of emotional depth. With a combination of humor, tension, and heartfelt moments, this book delivers a rich narrative experience that captivates from start to finish. 'Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries' by Heather Fawcett adds a touch of whimsy to my reading list with its charming, cozy fantasy vibes. The story follows a brilliant yet socially awkward professor who ventures into the magical realm of faeries during her research. This series is perfect for readers looking for a blend of adventure and academic exploration, filled with delightful moments and a sense of wonder. Finally, 'Shield of Sparrows' by Devney Perry presents a riveting tale of family loyalty and deception as the protagonist navigates her unexpected responsibilities amidst a backdrop of magical threats. This blend of adventure, romance, and personal growth within the familiar framework of fantasy tropes creates a refreshing narrative that proves to be both relatable and engaging. Each of these books offers a unique escape into their respective worlds, filled with unforgettable characters and plots that keep readers eagerly turning the pages. As we continue into the second half of the year, I look forward to discovering even more literary treasures that will inspire and ignite my passion for reading.
