Things I’m doing as a first time mom

Things I’m doing as a first time mom that upset people 🙂 If these things bother you, sorry but it’s not your baby. I love my son more than anything else and his dad and I have done lots of research and reading to come to our own conclusions on things that concern our baby. As he gets older, some of this might change, but some of it will stay the same. If you have any questions let me know. I am by no means a professional, just a mama that is doing her best.

1. I take my son to work with me.

- I wasn’t planning on going back to work after having my baby. However, we needed the extra money. Leaving my baby with a stranger wasn’t an option for me. So I took a job that pays WAY less than my previous job so that I can bring my son with me to work. I am ok with that. Our budget has gotten lots tighter, but I don’t have to worry about if my baby is alright or not.

2. We don’t have strict screen time rules.

- A tablet or iPad is not something that we have gotten for our son and we don’t plan on doing so. We do let him watch tv and YouTube though. There is not a set amount of time or limits that we set on his screen time. Usually whatever is on is something that my husband or I am watching so he watches with us.

3. I don’t take away what is fun.

- Sometimes the favorite “toys” aren’t toys at all. Recently my some has really enjoyed chewing on rags, blankets, or whatever he can get his hands on. As long as he doesn’t have something dangerous or something little enough to choke on, I’m not going to take it away or try to trade him for one of his toys.

4. I don’t make him wear clothes all the time.

- As long as the weather is nice, I don’t care if he only wears a diaper or onesie. I want my baby to be comfortable and if he is more comfortable in less clothes, then so be it.

5. I do the same things now, as I did before he was born.

- “You shouldn’t be doing that, you have a baby” is a comment I get frequently (especially from my MIL). While I understand that someone is trying to look out for me and my son, I am able to weigh pros and cons and use my judgment. If I don’t feel like something is unsafe, I am probably still going to do it and probably bring my baby along with me.

6. I haven’t left him with anyone other than my husband and my mom.

- People are weird. If I feel that someone is judgmental of my parenting choices, why would I leave my son with them?

7. I do my best to protect his privacy.

- Oh you can’t see his whole face or see him clearly? Good. That is intentional. I think my son is adorable and I would LOVE to be able to share that with the world, but again, people are weird.

8. We don’t let him “cry it out”.

- Anytime my baby is crying it is because he needs something. We don’t ask adults to self soothe. Why would we ask an infant to do so?

9. I hold him and baby wear a lot.

- He is never going to be this little again and I wasn’t to soak up as much of him as I can. My son enjoys being close to me, but some day he won’t. If he wants to be packed around I am willing to do so.

10. We don’t get all the vaccines.

- My husband and I have done lots of research on this topic and have made decisions that work best for our family and make us feel as though we have done everything we can to keep our son safe. While there are some vaccines our son has gotten or will get, there are others that we feel are unnecessary. I strongly encourage everyone to do their own research regarding this topic.

11. I breastfeed, but not exclusively.

- I breastfeed my son, but he will also take a bottle. Sometimes I even give him a taste of what I am eating.

12. We co-sleep.

- Since my baby doesn’t sleep through the night and we are still breastfeeding, it is easier to bring him to bed with me once he wakes up for the first time in the night. He starts the night in his crib, in his room, but moves to my bed around 3 AM. This works best for us, he also weighs 14 lbs andI am a light sleeper, so no I’m not worried about rolling over and squishing him.

Lots of love,

Brook ❤️

... Read moreBeing a first-time mom often comes with a wave of unsolicited advice and expectations. In reality, every family crafts their unique parenting style tailored to their child's needs. For instance, many advocate for breastfeeding, co-sleeping, and even the flexibility of screen time—practices that prioritize comfort and bonding. Research emphasizes the importance of responsive parenting; acknowledging when a baby cries for attention and understanding the developmental needs of infants promotes emotional security. Likewise, babywearing not only helps in maintaining closeness but also supports a practical approach to multitasking for moms. While vaccinations spark debates among parents, it's critical to stay informed through credible health sources and individual family circumstances when making decisions. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to parenting, and sharing various experiences helps create a supportive community. Overall, the journey of parenthood is filled with diverse paths, and embracing your instincts can foster a nurturing environment for your child.
