💅🏽 Rating My Under The Table Job I Took at 18 💵
You may say that taking an under the table job isn’t beneficial but I think otherwise! I just turned 18 and was just starting out my senior year of high school. My birthday is October so don’t judge lol. During this time I was in rotation of clinicals and my situation was not so well. The person my mom and I was living with at the time had a cleaning business and offered if I wanted to help out. I said yes but of course no school nights 🙂↔️. So I’d do Thursday through Sunday and would do a full week if I was on clinicals.
I really enjoyed doing this and I’m sure it helped build my experience too. Now that I think about it I should have had added this to my first resume I ever made lol.
We cleaned 4 places in total. Not always on the same night which was a good way not to get bored. I don’t remember the names of the actual places but I do remember the type of buildings they were.
-Truck Stop/Warehouse
10/10
Favorite one because it was soo huge. I saw trucks loading up with all types of stuff and it was off a lake so I’d see some wildlife
-Eye Surgical Clinic
8/10
I liked this place but it kinda gave “The Shining” vibes in the hallways which freaked me a bit. Plus the rooms would sometimes have left over blo*d from surgeries 🤢
-Doc Office 1
5/10
Couldn’t do much in this one for some reason so I’d always just cleaned the lobby which didn’t take long so i would be just sitting there.
-Doc Office 2
7/10
This place was similar to the other doctors office but I could clean other rooms other than the lobby
My shift would be at night of course with everything being done and all workers finished for the day. I suppose my love for night shift started here.
Now to the gritty part: MY PAY!
It was $5 an hour 😭
I know I know but as a high schooler I thought I was doing something. Plus it helped with bus fare going to school and clinicals.
So listen if the chance aligns and it sounds right don’t knock the “undocumented” gig off the table before you try it!
Oh as a bonus I threw in a picture from the morning after I worked. This was 2012 lol. I’m a millennial yes ima throw up a peace sign in every picture!

Under the table jobs, also known as unreported income, provide an intriguing dive into informal work dynamics. These types of gigs offer unique advantages, such as flexibility and immediate cash payment, but also come with significant risks including legal implications. Understanding the landscape of off-the-books employment is essential, especially for young workers. Many people engage in such jobs, often to supplement their income or gain experience without the formalities of traditional employment. However, it's crucial to remember that while these roles can be beneficial, they may expose individuals to issues like lack of job security, workers' rights protections, and potential tax complications. For many teenagers, like myself at 18, under the table jobs can serve as an excellent introduction to the work world. It's a chance to learn valuable skills, build a work ethic, and earn money to support education or other expenses. When considering such positions, young workers should weigh the pros and cons carefully. To ensure your experience is positive, conduct thorough research, understand your rights, and consider the long-term implications of such work. There are ways to make the most out of under the table jobs. Keeping records of your work, understanding the nature of the pay, and knowing when to transition to more formal employment can help you grow in your career. Engagement in conversations around the ethics and legality of such roles is also essential. Creating awareness can empower future workers to make informed decisions and advocate for their rights, regardless of the job type.
