Malta 🇲🇹

... Read moreLanding in Malta for my 3-day adventure was incredibly exciting! My journey officially began the moment I stepped off the plane at Malta International Airport (MLA). For anyone planning a short trip, knowing what to expect right from arrival can make a huge difference. First things first, the airport itself is quite modern and easy to navigate. After getting through customs, which was surprisingly quick, I headed straight to the arrivals hall. There are several facilities available, including ATMs, currency exchange (though I recommend using ATMs for better rates), and car rental desks. Since my trip was only 3 days, I decided against renting a car and opted for public transport and taxis. Getting from Malta International Airport to Your Accommodation: This is probably the most common question for new arrivals. Here are your best options: Buses: Malta has an excellent public bus network. From the airport, you can catch direct buses to various parts of the island, including Valletta (X4), St. Julian's/Sliema (X2, X3), and Bugibba. The bus stops are just outside the terminal. I bought a 7-day Explore card, which was super convenient for unlimited travel, even for just a 3-day stay, as individual tickets can add up. It saved me a lot of hassle! Taxis: There's a white taxi stand just outside the arrivals hall. Fares are fixed to popular destinations, so you won't get overcharged. It's quicker than the bus, especially if you have a lot of luggage or are arriving late. For my first night, I booked a pre-arranged transfer, which was waiting for me right as I exited, super smooth! Ride-sharing Apps: Bolt works well in Malta and can be a good alternative to traditional taxis. Just make sure you have local data or access to Wi-Fi at the airport to book one. I stayed in Valletta, so the X4 bus was a direct and scenic route, taking about 25-30 minutes. It was a great way to see some of the island as I traveled! Quick Tips for Arrival at MLA: Wi-Fi & SIM Cards: Free Wi-Fi is available, but for ongoing use, consider picking up a local SIM card from one of the kiosks. It's affordable and essential for navigation and booking Bolt rides. Food & Drink: There are cafes and snack bars if you need to grab something quickly after your flight. Information Desk: Don't hesitate to use the tourist information desk for maps or specific queries about your itinerary. They were really helpful when I asked about ferry times for the Blue Lagoon. The Melita Marine Group is often associated with maritime services and yachting in Malta. While not directly at the airport, it's a good reminder of Malta's strong connection to the sea. You might encounter their services if you're planning boat trips or charters from harbors like those near Valletta or Sliema, which are easily accessible from the airport after you've settled in. My trip included a boat tour to the Blue Lagoon, which is definitely a must-do, and many of these tours depart from ports that are a short ride from where the airport bus drops you. Starting my 3-day trip smoothly from Malta International Airport set the perfect tone for exploring this incredible island, from the historic streets of Valletta to the breathtaking clear waters of the Blue Lagoon. Highly recommend planning your airport transfer in advance to maximize your time!
