Watermelon Harvest

Today I was able to harvest some of my tiny watermelon! I have one big watermelon that’s still growing out there lord willing it is a sweet tasting watermelon!

I am really grateful to have this new experience with gardening! My second year and I actually grew fruit this time! I’m so excited for next season! I gotta be better about not being afraid of outside things like spiders and tiny frogs cause they are teeming in my garden make me scared to go near it and groom it even. Pitiful. But i will get better lol pray for me

... Read moreSeeing those little striped watermelons grow was such a thrill, but it also made me wonder: why are some watermelons tiny, and how do you ensure they're sweet for a true SUMMER WATERMELON experience? If you're like me and wondering about your melon garden journey, especially in the early stage, here are a few things I've learned (or wish I'd known!) that could help you get a more bountiful and delicious harvest. First, about those 'weird' or tiny watermelons: sometimes it's just the variety! Some types are naturally small, like Sugar Baby or Mini Love, perfect for smaller spaces. However, if your larger varieties are staying tiny, it could be due to insufficient water, poor pollination, or a lack of essential nutrients. Watermelons are incredibly thirsty plants, especially when the fruit is setting and growing rapidly. Ensuring consistent watering – deep and regular, especially during dry spells – is crucial. I try to water at the base to avoid leaf diseases. Also, feeding them with a balanced fertilizer, particularly one a bit higher in potassium once flowering starts, can make a huge difference. For achieving that coveted sweetness, full sun exposure (at least 6-8 hours daily) and allowing them to ripen fully on the vine are absolutely key. A gentle thump that sounds hollow, or a yellowing spot on the bottom where it rests on the ground, usually signals it's ready for harvest! Don't rush it! For beginners starting their melon garden, the watermelon plant early stage is incredibly important for setting the foundation for a successful season. I started mine from seeds indoors about 3-4 weeks before the last frost date to get a head start, transplanting them carefully once the danger of frost was completely gone and they had developed a few true leaves. Make sure your soil is well-draining and rich in organic matter. I amend my soil with compost every year. Giving them enough space to sprawl is also vital, as they need ample room for those long vines to spread out and for the fruit to develop without crowding. Some people use trellises for smaller varieties, which can save space and keep fruit off the ground. And about those garden critters? I totally get being scared of spiders and frogs (they definitely make me jump!), but often they're actually beneficial little helpers! Spiders catch pesky insects like aphids and cucumber beetles, and frogs love to munch on slugs and other garden nuisances. If you're looking for natural ways to deter actual harmful pests without harming the good guys, companion planting can be your best friend. Plants like nasturtiums can act as trap crops, while marigolds are known to repel nematodes and other pests. Just remember, a thriving garden, even with its creepy-crawlies, is a sign of a healthy, balanced ecosystem. Don't let a few eight-legged (or four-legged!) friends stop you from enjoying the amazing experience of growing your own delicious harvest!

🍉 Here are a few signs to look for when harvesting a Sugar Baby watermelon
🍉 1. The tendril closest to the watermelon turns brown and dries up. • This is one of the best indicators of ripeness. • If it’s still green, the melon usually needs more time. 🍉 2. Check the ground spot. • The spot resting on the ground should change from white to a creamy yellow color. 🍉
